file permissions and inheritence problems

I had to reformat again, some stupid problems. And I started noticing I was having problems editing options on my video folder. It has now led to me not being able to open certain files in there because my permissions are all screwed up. I went through windows help to explain it to me, but I don't get the thing about inheritence. Basically right now if I try to edit permissions on a folder within my videos folder, I start getting errors that access is denied. I took ownership of the folder, have full access but I checked inheritence it says from parent. I am extremely confused and XP wasn't this confusing (not to say vista is bad, I'm just not understanding the issue).

How can I simplify it so my permissions, inheritence will give me full unrestricted access to my files and folder so I can once again play them and edit the folder (lost my video icon, changed to a regular folder). Heavy security messing it up. I'm sure you guys will be confused, so I'll post screenies if you need em.

edit - i have found out that my user account is missing on the list for each video file, once I add it the video plays. BUT even if my user name is on for full control on the folder properties it says access is denied. wtf?

edit #2 - ok after removing my user account and readding, the files all play properly again. BUT my video icon will not change back to its proper form, it is a regular folder right now. This sometimes automatically occurs for my Music folder. How can I get it to let me change it back to default. UAC is definitely causing these issues

edit #3 - I just turned off UAC and the Videos icon was fine, I could edit security levels fine. It feels like my user account might have some limitations because of UAC.

sorry for multiple edits

really not understanding what could have happened enless you've downloaded a series of codecs and made rather major changes to the video folder and it's location... (but even then that doesn't make sense)

The only issue i can reproduce for a problem is moving the favorites folder from it's default location and then not being able to add favorites without thoroughly editing the privilages for the folder or run IE as admin to add a favorite (obviously quite rediculious)

i've since perfected and continue to perfect my vista installation schemes and setup.

I can play the files, but I lost my video icon and it keeps locking me out from making changes to the folder, not to the files. What the hell do i do? codecs are fine. mkv mp4 divx xvid are all fine

in addition this is screwing up media streaming for me on my ps3, cant find a lot of files and giving me errors.. ahh. now i actually am mad at UAC.

edit - It is specific random files that do not have administrative properties... how did this all get changed seriously? In addition, WMP media streaming will not add all files for some reason even though I have it set for all ratings and file types.

I fixed it... I went on the Playstation forums, they were some help but they were confused as well. I had to enable the Admin account in vista, then set read and execute for the user: WMPNetworkSVC for my Videos folder. When I tried this on my normal account, it denied me. In addition, I couldn't find that user to add to every single damn file.

So lesson learned, never again will I use my regular account and I will continue to use the full Administrator account. Don't have to bother with UAC either!
