Windows Vista for system builders OEM

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116207

Does anyone know what it means when it says.

Disclaimer document.write(neg_specification_newline('This OEM software is intended for system builders only and cannot be transferred to another PC once it is installed. The purchaser of this software is required to comply with the terms of the System Builder license, including the responsibility of providing all end user support for the software.

http://www.microsoft.com/oem/sblicense/default.mspx'));The purchaser of this software is required to comply with the terms of the System Builder license, including the responsibility of providing all end user support for the software.

http://www.microsoft.com/oem/sb license/default.mspx
The link they give doesn't work, when it says, the purchaser has to provide all end user support for the software, does that mean that I won't be able to call tech support if I have a problem?

When you build your system do you use system builders software?
Thanks.

well firstly, it means that the OS CD key is destined to die with the first system it is put in, it is not transferrable to another system.

the support thing only means that as you are the system builder, you are responsible for the system you built OS and all, you can still contact microsoft for questions and for a new CD key if you need to upgrade or something. after all, if there was no support, you wont be able to get a new OEM CD key that everyone is able to get

I think the best value for money right now is the Upgrade edition of Vista. The bad thing about the OEM version is that it locks itself with your mainboard, thus you will have a problem activating it if you change mainboard in the future. People claim to be able to pass that obstacle, but I wouldn't feel too comfortable with it to try it.

I think there is a solution for that. I have a trialware version of Vista that I plan on testing tomorrow, I will let you know.

Although this is a reasonable concern if you plan on trashing the old mobo, or installing it in a computer with linux, in the majority of cases, it's going to keep getting used with Windows, in which case, you'd need a license for both motherboards anyway.

Thanks for the help.
2 more questions

If I install Vista and my mobo dies in a month, is there any way to use the same cd?

Can I use the upgrade edition if the version of Windows XP I have is the CD that came w/ my gateway computer?

Heh,I had to read it a few times too,but I think he is saying that if you are going to use the mobo on another pc instead of throwing it away that you could use the the same license.

if your mobo blows up, microsoft is obliged to give you a new CD key, just call them

Sorry, I was wondering if that made sense when I wrote it.

theMaxx2099 essentiall got it.

When someone switches motherboards, the old motherboard is still going to require a Windows license in the (maybe vast, I'm not really sure) majority cases.

So unless one was not planning on running Windows with the old mobo anymore, the license isn't wasted.

Good point, I just don't like to invest in the possibility someone will want a Vista license if I decide to sell the mainboard.
