Personal opinion, and some will disagree, don't upgrade to Vista yet for gaming. I notice huge performance issues with the OS as compared to XP. It should be noted I don't have a DX10 card or a rig as powerful as yours.
Other than gaming, the OS is wonderful.

I wouldn't waste my time until SP1 is out, if ever.
Screw DX10 - what DX10 games are out? What DX10 games won't work in DX9 mode?
"I've done very little research on this, but I read online that if you drive a nail into your forehead with an air-gun, it will prevent headaches. What brand of airgun should I use do you think?"
Oh man...
Honest to gosh - save yourself the trouble. Vista is not worth the hassles. Even John Carmack think's XP is more than fine for the near future.

They sure wont.I didnt find that out til day before yesterday. You gonna have Vista to even run a DX10 game. But from what I'm reading, there gonna realese a DX-10 version, and a DX-9 version of the same games....Now if I am wrong, someone please correct me.

Aside from a few games that are made by namely Ubisoft and EA games, that has serious issues with vista.... (a few)... imo, i've seen better performance out of vista then xp ironically...
Course i'm using an ATI card setup.....

No dx 10 game is out yet (As far as i know)...But Crysis is going to be the big dx10 game.
As already mentioned above Vista looks as though it's going to need some time before it becomes gaming capable. My pc will probably be due for a huge upgrade by then, whenever that will be.The performance test vista has installed rated mine at 4.1.But i don't know if thats a low or medium scoreline.
Vista works well for normal use ie office type of stuff,so to be honest stick with xp for a while longer and save you're cash for the time being.
I have recently ditched my dual boot (vista/XP) set up for the time being.I may try vista out in another six months time.

I'm only going by my system's performance and i ran vista for around 2 or 3 weeks. It may well need much more feedback from more nvidia users in the next few months or so.Besides my abit AG8 is no longer supported so this is probably now at the highest specs possible with the last bios update.
You're pc may be a different altogether.

sp1 for vista comes out later this year, at least wait for that(that is when ill probally get vista). i imagine there will be a substantial improvement overall & most driver issues, at least on the nv side, should be gone by then. hopefully creative will get their act together between now & then.

Hey,
heres some performance results ATM with the catalyst 7.2's
XP vs Vista + the xp CF vs Vista CF
Serious Sam 2 apparently has some fairly major issues.... (and i don't think FSAA is working at all still in it, xp and vista FSAA doesn't work worth shit)
HOWEVER so far it's the only game i'm experiencing any performance issues with at all atm.
Anyways, since testing started, i've gone back and forth between xp and vista, and atm, i'm sitting solid on vista 32bit for gaming and the works... hell even the orginal UT99 classic game works leaps and bounds better under vista

Yes... creative's drivers are a little limited under vista.... (for me at least)
I had a problem getting hold of a x-fi Xtreme music driver.Eventually found a beta driver for my card.
This had problems with my 5.1 speakers which consantly reset to 2.1's on every boot up.Not to mention all the stange background crackling sounds from time to time.

considering the system specs..
Nvidia is having fairly significant issues with vista.... enough to gather up a class action lawsuit against them... (erg)
Creative hasn't had any better of a launch.
so far, if you've got either of the 2 or both, it's probably best to keep your distance from vista.

As if DX 9 wasn't cool enough already? Just stuck with XP until like 2010 and see what happens down the road with Vista. I honestly don't think Vista is compelling enough to justify the upgrade..
So a few games come out that use DX 10. If they run on XP with DX 9, I don't think folks will be missing much. Certainly not enough to put up with all the crap upgrading to Vista puts you through.

We'll have to come back to this statement in a year or so to see how so true/untrue it is. DX10 will be main stream this time next year. Run XP until 2010 for gaming? You are kidding, yes?

It's only 3 years away. You don't think XP can hang on 3 more years with DX 9? Even though support goes until 2014?
UT2004 still kicks arse and it's only DX 8...
Far Cry still looks great with DX 8. Pixel Shaders were not all that impressive, after all, and were poorly used to boot. Adding shine to rusty pipes and wood planks... For shame.

But...Hawg is running Direct X 10 cards. Why would he want to hinder the capability of his hardware? It's one thing to tell some one to stick to XP for the time being because moving to Vista now offers no advantage. However, it's another to tell some one to NEVER move since DX9 is good enough. Who here actually thinks that, and is not going to move to not have better graphics? XP has a year or so left in it then it will be left behind. It's not my opinion but it's just how new technology out paces the old.

So your personal vendetta against Microsoft & Vista is the whole basis for him to stick to XP? He's already going to stick w/ XP until there is a good reason to move to Vista.

I have Vista on dual boot, and I guess your okay having Nvidia graphics, if you had a ATI card I would strongly recomend you dont use it for gaming until ATI gets their finger out of its collective bum hole and produce something that works.
