Marvell Yukon 88E8056 - SATA RAID Problem under Vista
GIGABYTE P965 rev 1.x / 2.0 / 2.x / 3.3...
model names... GA-965P-DQ6, 965P-DS4, 965P-DS3P, 965P-DS3, 965P-S3. and (may be) other motherboard models with onboard LAN using Marvell Yukon 88E8056 chip. Marvell's GBT5613n (firmware update file) for GIGABYTE boards is available to download at GIGABYTE.com.tw > Support > Motherboard > FAQ > <motherboard name> as per GIGABYTE's info the Marvell's firmware update may solve the problems, which include things like... 1. System hangs up when installing Windows Vista. 2. RAID array fails. 3. If the Marvell LAN is disabled in OS, system becomes extremely slow when copying files or even hangs up. ** i like to suggest that you check with GIGABYTE's for more info on this and before you decide to flash the Marvell's firmware file. ** i personally use rev 1.0 boards, however, i don't have problem installing Vista, or configuring RAID and using the onboard LAN at the same time under Vista. so i think, GIGABYTE P965 rev 1.0 may or may not have this problem since the boards may use Marvell Yukon 88E8053 chip. the Marvell's firmware file is also available for GIGABYTE P965 965P-DQ6 rev 1.0 and 965P-DS4 rev 1.0, however i have not tried it yet. the same problem goes to ASUS P5B Deluxe and (may be) other board models with onboard LAN using Marvell Yukon 88E8056 chip (see more info. below) More info on the problems and on the ASUS's board can be found here - http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/...65605&PageID=0 More, or better, info may be added later. Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller conflicting with raid on vista?
verry interesting as thats a popular brand / chipset. I think I have it on my abit board. if it's firmware related could be a broader issue....

i found this while browsing the TechNet forums, then i went to Gigabyte.com.tw/ to check, at the web site i saw the below FAQ "ID 2372", which exists on all motherboard models that i mentioned above.
i still don't know the whole story of how the Marvell Yukon 88E8056 causes any of the problems, however i think there must be some of user reports of the problems. as i checked the Marvell's flash utility and EEPROM file that Gigabyte has provided, the files are belong to Marvell and the EEPROM file is for the 8056 chip, but the boards that i have, are having Marvell 8053's. so i don't think i will ever flash the chip, unless i have found the problems myself, and i'd probably want to ask Gigabyte's, to be sure first. Where can I find the firmware for the DS4 rev1? I flashed the wrong one on a friend's mobo and now we can't get a connection. So I really need the original/right firmware.

since the 965P-DS4 (rev. 1.0) uses Marvell Yukon 88E8053 chip (not Marvell Yukon 88E8056 chip likes rev. 2.x and rev.3.3 boards), but the eeprom update files in the FAQ ID 2372 was (when i checked the files at the time) actually wrote for Marvell Yukon 88E8056 chip, you will have problem after flashing eeprom using the utility files that you download from the FAQ ID 2372's link. as i understand the device ID include MAC address on your Marvell Lan onboard the 965P-DS4 (rev. 1.0) will be overwrote. however, the device is not dead completely, you can contact the Gigabyte tech support they will provide a fix to resolve the problem you have. i can give you a quick fix, just for now, if you want to, by using the "yukonvpd" that is included in the utility file package you can write a hardware (MAC) address to it.... create a DOS boot disk, then include the command-line tool yukonvpd to it... and boot your system from this boot disk, at the prompt enter yukonvpd directly, and then check the complete list of command-lines and switchs that exists for this tool, then look for the command that you can use to write a MAC address to the device and enter your MAC address (your Marvell Lan's MAC address is printed at the Lan port on your motherboard). Do not attempt to change anything else. then you should be able to use the Marvell Lan and register to a network. however, you still need to contact Gigabyte tech support for a real fix that will help bring the device to original... or close to, i hope. the rev.1, rev.2, rev.3.3 things you see on this thread are specifically meant for the Gigabyte's motherboards.
and also, even though, as i have seen, some ASUS P5B Deluxe users at the TechNet forum said that they tried the Yukon's firmware updates from Gigabyte's web site, but they probably don't know that the firmware is not only made for the Marvell Yukon xx8056's, but the contain of the "eep.bat" was also created specifically for Gigabyte's, and this when i last checked the contain of eeprom's and the eep.bat files that's available at the Gigabyte's web pages at the time, the eeprom file itself was for Yukon xx8056's device alright, but the "eep.bat" was wrote for updating the Subvendor-ID of Gigabyte. so that, i think you ought to check with your board maker before you want to try anything on your own. also, if i were you, i would try to collect as much as information on the TechNet forum, there are over 100 threads over there, so it's a lot of info. be warned again... for people with GIGABYTE P965 rev 1.0 based... especially, the board model names... GA-965P-DQ6 (rev 1.0), 965P-DS4 (rev 1.0), your Yukon Lan device onboard your board can be Marvell Yukon xx8053 (not xx8056). if you have any question regarding this, just ask in this thread, and i'll try to figure it out as much as i can. |

and could be that the problem may not occur with every P5WD2-E Premium systems, nor every system that uses the Marvell Yukon 88E8056 chip, myself also use many boards that come with Marvell Yukon Lan chip (but never had ones with the 88E8056 chip) and the system also uses Intel RAID, i never had any of the problems either, as a matter of fact. i also think, otherwise there wouldn't be a lot of discussion about the problems and the details. so it could be that the root causes of the problems might be different from system to systems, and that one fix would not fit all.
