got windows vista yesterday......what i can say is.......
its a good OS it is much more responsive than XP to me, but the driver support for alot of stuff is HORRID i mean seriously i had so much trouble finding reasonable drivers for everything, my wireless card, netgear WG311T has no drivers out for it so i had to use an older linksys card that had some mediocre drivers for it..........but its slowwwww dial up slow
i had a hell of a time installing the betas for the X-Fi and i had no microsoft word so i had to download the trial of office 2007.....thats not exactly a very negative thing but ya
i think most people should wait a few more months for some decent drivers for their favorite stuff.
right now i am just booting back and forth between vista and XP to get stuff done thanks to my two drives

i dont.
i think xp was adopted much faster than vista will be. xp was needed, previous win vers skd. this isnt true now, xp is a very good & stable os - especially for gamers - there is no pressure/reason to migrate to vista unless u just got to have the latest. & even at its best vista isnt any faster for gaming rt now, & may never be.
imo vista wont be truly viable until sep/oct/or later this year when sp1 is released, by that time driver & game support should be stabilised too, wich is when i plan on making the step.

I don't have real problems with Vista now and I already use it for more than a week, everything is installed the way I like it
So no complains for the moment

You'd be surprised at how many XP drivers work just fine on Vista if need be. I got my 5+ year old Epson scanner to work great with the 2002 XP drivers on their site and also had to do the same with logitech keyboard. Just make sure to run them in compatibility mode

i've had no driver issues at all, only issues i've ran into are related to creative cards, wireless pci cards and or adapters, and really old hardware in general.

judas i love your post. u say u have had no driver issues then go on to list 3 issues & a vague overall complaint lol
& i get that most of what u r talking about(except for sound & wireless) r minor/normal issues with old crap. just thought it funny

Well just making it clear (i thought, apparently not so clear)
While the newest machines i've built within the last 3 years have absalutely NO issues thus far with Vista, the older, 2nd hand, or even newer Prebuilt machines i've attempted to setup Vista on has either failed miserably OR specific devices will not work, or will never work with vista. (POS Prebuilts)... Hell i had one dell rig that came in, the customer had bought it while the "get xp home and get home premuim upgrade for so and so" and when vista launched, they grabbed it, fired it up, and now the "vista capable" Dell doesn't work worth shit with vista.
So while i myself haven't had any of my own machines run into any issues with vista, the prebuilts i've worked on, the typical problems people SHOULD expect with older or discontinued products are prevailent.
I've got a P3 1ghz 512mb of ram, machine here with 9550 radeon card in it, while the installation went fine, and ati's current 7.1's don't appear to work at all (won't install as it can't find a capable components it states), i can only crop that specific problem up with the current drivers being slightly immature still most likely easily resolved soon. The sound cards i had however would not work at all. All of them creative mind you. I got an older "unknown" to me sound card to work however in vista. The machine otherwise works beautifully under vista, hell even without the ati drivers, and using the vista supplied drivers, I can use the Aero Interface and that's with only 512mb of ram. And it's smooth as silk, probably just as if not more responcive as xp.
So while yes, people are having issues with Vista, i beleive majority of the issues are driver/hardware specific. And probably out of them all, over 3/4's of them all are related to POS Prebuilt machines, even the ones that say "Vista Capatible" or "Vista Ready" on them.

I plugged in an old Epson 760 printer last night and was on the Epson site before I realised it had fully installed and even included all the cool alignment and print checks from years ago. I have about 6 ink cartridges for it that I was ready to consign to the bin. Bonus

Exactly. Unfortunately it will take time, just like it did with XP. I recommend dual booting with XP for a while. this way you can keep up to date with Vista and learn it inside and out but fall back on XP when something isnt quite right.
I predict it will be well usable as a main OS for everything mid year.

So far though, I've had very little to complain about. The bitch I had was how long it took the transfer wizard to do it's thing. Too be fair I had about 20 cd's to copy. I really need a USB drive to work with at times like that.

usb memorysticks and drives are EXTREMELY useful............and so is a second internal drive
i got XP running on my other IDE drive and it is goin good with that if i need to do anything that i cant here, i have bits and pieces that i need to pull out like i needed to install FEAR Extraction Point and the FEARXP.exe wasnt there so i just plucked that from XP and was going great after. i have the 60 day trial of office 07 so i can do hw except my epson c88 printer had no vista drivers so i can only print from my samsung ML-2250 laser printer
that my only issue left but this thing is really nice! i like windows media center works great after setting it up aside from a few random shut downs if its idle for too long

So far I have Vista good, the only thinkg i am struggling for drivers with is my Logitech G15 keyboard - Logitech apparently didnt realise Vista was coming out...
apart form that the PC works fine and the ATI drivers seem as good (to the nakes eye, maybe not to the last FPS) as XP drivers for the games i play (No OpenGL at present - damn you Quake Wars for being delayed)

Hi bananananaman . Your G15 will run fine with the xp drivers and vista. I've been using them with beta and the release version. I still have the full functionality and apps.
Hope that helps

While I understand why you are running 64bit Vista you really are going to be in a even worse situation with drivers as 64 bit support is a few months behind the 32bit version.
I have been testing both versions for almost a year and I really wouldnt recommend the 64 bit at all and it probably won't be truly useful until the end of the year.

while 32bit appears to be more mature yes, hopefully more people make the jump to x64 to give more inititive into createing the x64 drivers matched with the 32bit or even serprass it oventually.

i know, i know ... in hindsight it was a bit silly but I only wanted to buy it once and thought that it would also be a good excuse to get 4GB of RAM .
However, it has been good apart from the keyboard, which, tbh, is only a minor issue.
It is one of those situations where if no one moves the 64bit drivers wont get better so I am hoping that I am helping to resolve the situation by taking a bit of pain now

My Documents
Excuse me interrupting but I am somewhat perplexed by my Vista. I tried to download my XP 'My Document' contents via a memory pen to 'My Documents' in Vista and a box came up telling me that I was not entitled to do so. Is there some incantation which I must use to get Vista to recognise me as Boss?
