Aero not working on X1600
This has been frustrating me since Vista came out, I decided to wait and see if there was a way to force it on the final Vista but all I keep seeing is outdated methods. I'm running Vista Ultimate Final on an Alienware laptop with an X1600 mobo with the latest Vista drivers (7.1) and Windows does not want to let me use Aero (Aero is not even listed in the themes).
Video acceleration works because I can play games, so I know thats not the issue. I think it may be more of a driver issue, ATI isn't the best with mobile support. I tryed refreshing my Windows Experience Index Rating to see if Windows would detect my card supports Aero but that didn't work either because the test can't gather all the information and fails. This is really frustrating me and wasting more time than I thought it would... is there ANY way to force Aero glass and effects on Vista Final? I know my card supports it

Did you run an upgrade of Vista? I found that the Experience wouldn't properly rate my video card until I did a clean install.

![]() By clean install what do you mean? Like as in wipe the hardrive and start fresh? I guess I could back up important stuff on DVD-RW's but I'm not really into starting over. If it didn't solve my issue I might get a little frustrated lol, however if it did I'd be happy, I might try it this weekend... Oh and by the way... I just got the newest drivers (Feb 21st) and the issue still exists :/ |

you don't need to wipe the hardrive to do a clean install of Vista, just don't choose to run an upgrade install. however, you need to have plenty of hard drive space, Vista needs it to create backup on your old files, and for the new Vista setup, to offload and decompress its image to the drive.
