If you're still watching this, I managed to fix this type of thing.
If you have Avast Anti-Virus installed then this sort of error occurs because Avast's NTVDM scanner isn't compatible with the Vista NTVDM system yet, but it installs itself there anyway. Anytime NTVDM needs to run something it will crash because Avast can't scan it correctly.
The fix is to enter Safe Mode (F8 at bootup and navigate to select Safe Mode.) and open config.NT in notepad. (It's in the Windows\System32 folder.) You could delete the reference, but I just put REM in front of the line with the Avast scanner in it. It was the last line there for mine. Save it, reboot, then Avast won't mess with it.
I put the REM command there because I will restore it by deleting the REM comment before either uninstalling Avast or installing a new program upgrade when they release one. I'm thinking I don't want to mess with the Avast setup programs in case they depend upon that line being there as they set it up.
A fellow at the Avast forum said this is the only way to work around this for now. Of course, if some virus tries to infect a dos type of operation while Vista is using its NTVDM stuff it will be able to, but this is probably 99% not going to happen. I'd rather have my programs work!
