ATI display driver problems - x800!

I installed the Vista Beta 2 to try it out (been really anxious to) on my "older" custom built system with an ASUS A7N8X deluxe and AMD Barton 2800+, etc. I have a Built-by-ATI x800 Pro 256MB and have been running with that fine for quite some time.

I got the beta Vista drivers from the ATI site and did the install app. It was reverted back to 640x480 so after it said it was completed fine and I rebooted, I attempted to switch it back to 1600x1200 but it doesn't go. It sticks at 800x600 no matter what. So I've tried all kinds of stuff; e.g. manually searching for the driver in the extracted folder, and it installs fine and says reboot, and same problems. Still no luck!

After a bunch of tinkering I look in the properties for the device and see that I have the "Code 43" error saying "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems." and a yellow ! in my device manager list.

I've tried everything to no success. I honestly don't even care if these have hardcore 3d ability yet, I just want to run Vista at 1600x1200 smoothly with all the power of the x800 (and ATI drivers) properly.

Last two notes: I installed the latest Omega via a direct driver inf search and it worked fine (oddly). I got it to go 1600x1200 and work fine... except when I rebooted it would BSOD and state that ATI driver as the fault, so I know it wouldn't work. This happened multiple times -- even on the uninstall. And also, when I boot into safe mode, and look at device manager list, it shows x800 Pro and x800 Pro Secondary in the display adapters just as it does when it is installed correctly (in XP) but when I reboot same problems. I've even tried the F8 and disabling driver signing requirement option and no difference.

Any help here?! I haven't seen any real big ATI driver Vista beta problems document/discussed here, especially for a "modern" (not x1*00 series tho) ATI card.

I think all of us ATI X*** are having driver problems. All we can hope is that ATI releases some drivers tailored especially for the latest build of Vista (5384). Oddly enough I was actually thinking about doing the same thing. Glad I didnt install thoes Omega Drivers on Vista beta 2(5384).

Well, I got pissed off and essentially said "screw it". I attempted to install the Omega ATI drivers for XP. Long behold the drivers installed with ease. My x800 was installed and no artifacts or degridation. The only side effect was that every other shutdown/restart I get a blue screen and it does a memory dump. But alas I have my 3d! My Graphics card is rated at 5.80 on Vista I am asuming if we actually got some decent drivers built for it, this might exceed that number.

PS: World of Warcraft works peachy with the Omega Drivers installed.

yea, same problems I had with it. It worked "fine" except for reboots/shutdowns.

haha it's only during the shutdown phase. never BSOD except for when you shutdown or reboot... turning on no BSOD...

Can't install ATI X550XT

Hello,

I've gfot a different issue with Vista BETA 2 and my X550XT I can't get it installed, the driver keeps giving an error. I tried my onboard X2xx express and that worked ok. I pulled out my X550XT and I saw that a PCI-to-PCI-bridge conflict was solved. Does onebody have a suggestion why I can't install it or what I do wrong ?

I did experience something odd with the Omega drivers... Vista installed Ati's drivers during the initial OS setup. I switched it to "Standard VGA" and rebooted.

Ran the setup for the Omega drivers, and was told to revert back to the standard vga...

I double checked, and it was...

Rebooted, verified that the standard vga was the current driver... The Omega driver installation crapped out again, with the same response...

I've got the built by ATI x850PRO. The Vista included driver did work fine and 3D was enabled in DxDiag. But of course, with no control over things. So I installed the ATI driver for Vista and it installed smoothly. No reducing my screen resolution. It just swtched it for a second during the install, but returned to 1024x768 immediately. Perhaps try that res? Maybe higher is a problem, but that's the highest I normally use.

Now, I had UAC and driver signing disabled in Vista so I don't know how that affected things. I also had Windows Defender off because on my first attempt to run Vista (that got fubared because of something else I installed) it removed the ability to run Catalyst Control Center. I think it isn't a recognized program yet. So this time I'll just activate Windows Defender without the scanning of startup processes and program stuff. Just the internet things.

It's stable and all the available CCC operations operate. It doesn't include stuff like Smartgart, Recovery, etc, but what appears in CCC works. No 3D preview movie or video preview, but the settings run.

I am also using the Vista build 5456.5 so it is possible that something was fixed between the public release and this updated build. I'm not a beta tester, just a customer preview program member. I managed to download the newer build through a Torrent. It's also the full official DVD and activates fine with my official customer preview key. Heck, if they fixed stuff I wanted it! After all, they're going to send me the RC1 DVD when it comes out anyway.

I didn't try DriverCleaner but just installed the ATI download over what Vista had and it worked. I'll try it at some point but for now I just wanted to see what happened this way. I normally always use DriverCleaner Platinum to clean between driver updates but this is a new OS and I didn't want to need immediate formatting again as I had just went through that.
