Iroth is on a distinguished road

I've been reading a lot about Vista Beta 2 over the last couple of hours and a problem (annoyance really) that people have been having is the UAC. If anyone is curious how to turn that annoyance off go to user accounts in the control panel and choose 'change security settings'.

It seems like an easy enough thing to do and figure out, and it was, but I haven't seen anything yet that tells how to turn it off as of yet, so if you're curious and it's bothering you, now you know.

In a related note, you might be interested in THIS article. Not only does it talk about alternatives to disabling UAC, but also talks about what UAC is supposed to accomplish, and gives suggestions and comments on what Microsoft could do to actually get UAC to the point of being usefull.. and not so annoying.

UAC has potential. Problems is that people are so pissed of with UAC, not realizing what it is that Microsoft is trying to accomplish security wise, that they do exactly what you described without realizing this. It's not that it isn't a great tip, Iroth, it is, and sure it solves the immediate annoyance, but since people are turning off that feature it's not being tested as it should be. And since this is still beta, doing so isn't very helpful.

So can vista and xp pro have duel boot configuration?
I mean I use XP Pro as main OS and Vista for testing....

I did it with a prior release, and it worked fine - requires a separate partition, of course, but you end up with the Longhorn boot loader providing boot menu services.

Works in this one too, you get the option to run windows or an older version of windows if you install from your previous version and select a clean partition to install to.

If you do pick the option to install to a seperate partition I would first recommend creating a bootable floppy (an XP Bootdisc is perfect for this), and then copying these specific files from the root of your boot partition to that floppy: boot.ini, ntdetect.com, and ntldr (these files are hidden, so you will need to change your folder options in order to see hidden files as well as OS releated files). If you need to recover from a bad install of Vista, Vista crashes, or you want to get rid of Vista, then you have the original files for booting to your main, original OS.

Infact, check out a site called Bootdisk.com. This site hosts bootable floppies for pretty much any situation, as well as hosts floppies for all Windows OS. In particular, you can download the XPQuick bootable floppy maker HERE. This will create an XP Bootable floppy. This floppy will bypass the boot files on the local hard drive for the ones on the floppy itself (after you create the floppy you will see boot.ini, ntdetect.com, and ntldr on it). All you do is create a bootable floppy with the tool, then copy over your boot.ini, ntdetect.com, and ntldr files from the root of your boot partition to that floppy, overwriting when asked.

Yes dual boot is easily achievable, obviously dual Hard drive or dual partition is the solution you would need. Having XP installed first, just install vista beta 2 on another hard drive, it gives a boot menu on start up.

hehe, yeah dual boot isnt a problem... getting rid of the dual boot IS! you cant just delete the partition because the bootrecords will be scr*wed... and Vista doesnt use the boot.ini for boot purposes, so no point in modifing it.

The ones from Win Update don't work, download the driver package from Soundblaster.com. . .they work, but somewhat disappointing functionality (two speakers only, no advanced features).

not really, once the novelty wears off its just like XP with a hugely resource sucking skin at half the speed. good to look at a few times then reboot into XP to actually do anything productive.

'Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security' is ment to work with vista (32bit) & peerguardian beta version but you need to uninstall windows defender

I agree with that. . .also the file exploring/organizing system is a step back when it is supposed to be a step forward. I found myself clicking around like a madman trying to locate very basic stuff. . .the new Start menu is lame also. . .

I have way too many apps vista's compatibility test report is not compatible and will not work.

So after last night i done a clean install of vista,Just to see what this is like and what a frigging system hog.....And i don't have the slowest of pc's.

Downloaded as many vista drivers before hand, including the beta drivers for my xfi soundcard..... simply could not get them to detect my 5.1 set up.And that was the betas from creative.

Getting my internet access back online was the most problematic for me but i got it sorted after 3 hours. My nic driver was the problem.

But i have to say even with 2 gig vista was way too slow but i am going to respect this could being Beta could be the reason.

Sorry but at this time i'm back on xp pro.If i'm to upgrade in the future i hope microsoft spend this next year to tweak this to become more user friendly.

I certainly won't say im high on the tech side of future os or hardware but after such a short time but the layout and navigation aspects of vista is certainly NOT user friendly.

And as for the time for vista beta 2 to install,I could have xp installed 3 times over in the same time.

the Vista X-Fi drivers on the Creative website are only for Vista Beta 1 correct?...they won't work correctly with Beta 2...in fact on the Creative download site they mention that "This download supports Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit Beta Build 5231 and may not work on other Vista builds"

The first time start up of vista took 10 mins on my system which is unacceptable.
And i have to agree its way too much of a cpu & memory hog just listening to music i have 20-35% cpu usage. navagating is also unacceptable too many menus in control panel now, still dont no what half of them do

Yeah seems to work only with 32bit, theres not very many firewalls or virus scanners for 64bit xp pro let alone for vista 64 bit

By Zardon http://www.avast.com/ also works......

ANTIVIR GUARD does too, well actually i`m having problem with update schechule, but everything else works, i have tested in some website that i know they have spywares and viruses....

By the way , i have a sound blaster audigy 2 value and hacked PAX-FI drivers wich it worked for VISTA beta 2 and it provided all setup for speaker 4.1 5.1 etc...
