exclamation Vista(64bit)- ATI driver problems

Hey guys,

I am having quite a difficult time installing the new drivers, or any drivers for that matter for me video cards.

I have two Sapphire Radeon 4850 512mb GDDR3 video cards, on an ASUS p5Q Pro LGA 775 (intel core duo E8400). On the Windows Vista 64bit home version.

Only way I can have drivers at the moment seems if i update through windows. It gives me this driver version :8.501.0.0 and driver date: 6/2/2008.

When I update the driver using any of the suites (i have tried 8.6-8.10), it generally gives me the same problems. Where it will no longer recognize my cards and give me the message "No ati graphics driver is installed or the ati driver is not functioning properly." At which point, I am at 800x600 resolution.

My last few tries have resulted in an error message coming up during installation. something along the lines of an .INF file missing.

I have tried doing a driver cleaner, and followed instructions by other posts in other forums...but no luck.

At this point, I am completely confused on how to update my video card driver...my first time dealing with ATI

Hopefully, I put enough information on this post to give you all a clear idea of what I am experiencing.

Danial

Re: Vista(64bit)- ATI driver problems

that's really unfortunate that your first ATI experience is not going the way it should at all..

you technically shouldn't be having a single problem installing straight away. And you can't really use older drivers either

Have you tried the drivers off the CD... what about from Sapphire's website?

Did you install the intel INF Update utility followed by the ati drivers EMEDIATELY after doing a fresh install of Vista?

Re: Vista(64bit)- ATI driver problems

I apologize, i should have stated this first. This is not a fresh install.
When i first got the video cards, I installed using the CD. It worked with the driver that came with the CD. I since, decided to update the driver...which appears to be a bad idea. Because, now not only cannot i not get the new version, I cant seem to install off the CD anymore...

I am not sure what you mean by "Did you install the intel INF Update utility followed by the ati drivers EMEDIATELY after doing a fresh install of Vista?" Could you point me in the direction I need to get it?

Re: Vista(64bit)- ATI driver problems

If you were doing a fresh install, the motherboard your using i beleive (i'm pretty damn sure at least) uses an Intel P45 chipset... and if you do the install of vista yourself, you should/must install the chipset drivers for the board for the fully fuctionality to be had.

Here's a link to the intel INF update utlity..... if you never installed the drivers, you may to do this as it could considerably improve things....

Download Software, Drivers and Utilities Filters

As for your driver problem with a previous install of vista. What video card did you have before, also what drivers, and did you just shutdown the computer and replace the video card or did you go through the programs & features of vista to remove the video card/drivers/software related to it before doing the replacement?

Usually it's not a good idea to just try to install drivers overtop of previous drivers (usually)..... And it's expectially known to be problematic if you have a nvidia card and then switched to an ati card..... thier driver reminents tend to offend the other, making the whole thing one nasty mess.

I'd advise removing all software/drivers related to the previous video card and the current one via the "programs and features" which can be found in the control panel. Then rebooting, Drivercleaner would be a an extra step to make sure all things are cleaned up. You can find info about drivercleaner at http://www.drivercleaner.net/

Hopefully that's a good start.

You may for a 100% solution, wipe your current vista installation and install a fresh one. This of course is a last resort solution.

Re: Vista(64bit)- ATI driver problems

Thanks for the help Judas.

I took your advice, and an IT friends advice to solve the problem.

Overall...wasted about 6 hours altogether to fix the problem.

ATI drivers are truely a bitch to install...

Re: Vista(64bit)- ATI driver problems

Really truly, i installed ATI drivers quite frequently.... the only problems i've ever had was due to non reference cards or mobility devices which isn't the fault of ATI....

anything AGP that is HD2xxx and above or Mobility is a hit and miss quite frequently.

Otherwise i've never had a problem with any other ati card unless the card was faulty.

i'm loving the vista drivers, such smooth & nicer installs than the full screen XP installer
