HD 2600 XT and DVI/DMI output

My HD 2600 XT detects a HP LCD monitor w2207h (with HDMI input) as a HDTV. I.e. only 720p, 1080p etc.. modes are available. When I use Catalyst control center to force 1680x1050 Hz (the native res) then the monitor drops dead (black screen and have to reset power).

I think it must have something to do with running Vista and monitor having HDMI input. I've tried to monitor on a XP PC with NVidia card and it worked perfectly.

Any experiences or suggestions !!?
