Who has probs (BSOD's) with Vista and 7.3

Here is what worked for me:

I went back to the restore point before install. Then when I reinstalled the drivers I checked ONLY Catalyst Control Center and drivers. Now everything runs fine. I think that the RAID driver and the C++ update are the problem...at least for me.

Indeed that is good news if it happens, however I can only go on what the ATI technicians told me:

"We have responded to your issue.

Well us poor suckers with 1950GTs are out of luck for nearly 3 months with our new cards. Imagine that, my card will likely be price-performance obsolete before I can ever even use it.

PS. Cat 7.2 specifically does not support the 1950GT and says in the release notes to wait for 7.3. Now they're saying "Wait for 7.4"

Worked fine for me, but for some strange reason I got 3 stopped responding messages from Vista when installing the hotfix. Happened about every time it blanked the screen. I also got 2 lost communication errors from my APC UPS program which uses USB. I just hit the red X on the stopped responding messages and it completed and log said no errors.

Here's my step by step.

I had a clean working 7.2 install.

Disabled Crossfire

Ran 7.3 install and chose update.

Completed without errors according to log.

When asked to reboot I said no.

Ran 7.3 hot fix.

Chose update.

Got above errors.

Rebooted after complettion.

Re-enabled Crossfire.

All appears to be working fine.

Just a few strange indications during the update, but working none the less.

The hotfix package doesn't work for me with my Fic A97p 128mb 9700pro and CUV4X-DLS dual PIII w/ Via ApolloPro 694X board. I get the same BSOD that I see with every driver set except 8.31.100.321 Vista RTM.

Hi John. The error you describe is not the same as the one we are dealing with on this thread. This one is win32k.sys blue screen error. For your error would you be so kind as to start up a new thread with the error message as the title, and post your full system specs and then that way I can see if anyone else has that problem.

I just went back uninstalled 7.3, cleaned the registry, did a fresh install of the 7.3 driver package, applied the hotfix and now it works.

Kudos for the STALKER Crossfire support btw.

while i have not participated in this thread or had the problems here as my wifes 1800xl is on xp system, i just wanted to thank you, TERRY(ty very much judas lol), for the way you have dealt with this and other ati problems.
wished the 'other' brand would take a lesson.
because of the way u & ati have dealt with various issues there is a very good chance i will be buying an ati card when i upgrade next.

This is actually a documented issue in the KB. Its a result of using a motherboard that is not Vista ready.

My motherboard is Intel 915gm with ATI mobility X600 and I get the same issue

The workaround I am using is after installing catalyst 7.2 or 7.3, go into safe mode and replace the atikmdag.sys with the one came with 8.31.100.3.2.1.

The question I would like to ask is what specific function I will not able to use because of changing the kernal driver to an old one. So far I am running everything fine even OpenGL.
Another question is if the old kernal driver works, it should be technically able to revert something and make everyone who is using a non-vista ready motherboard happy. I wonder why ATI team is unable to do that....

According to the link, the cause of the issue is still not known.

But the RTM release drivers do work and nvidia cards and drivers work as well. Every other on board peripheral works as well. I'll gather up the data and start another thread.

For me,the BSOD on startup is completely gone and i dont know if it's normal,but...i have also a performance boost in Crossfire Mode on Oblivion.STALKER now run nothing less then 2x more fast on Crossfire mode for me!!!

Good to hear that there's a hotfix. But it made things worse for me...much worse.

I installe 7.3 as usual and then added the hotfix. The screen went black as usual during the installation but well...it didn't change back. It was black for 15 minutes. I restarted the PC and well... The screen turns black and goes into standby modus everytime Windows loads.

Only workaround is using the safe mode and turning the display driver to the VGA Standard.

Since then I'm not able to install a functional catalyst driver. I installed multiple older catalyst drivers with the same result..black screen during windows startup.

I'm currently logged in with my VGA Standard driver and don't know what to do! Everytime I install a catalyst...well it seems that it doesn't installe them correctly as the screen doens't flicker during the installation any more!

Please help me...

After that's done..I'll stay with 7.2 and never touch the hotfix again...

Everythin succeeded but the Driver isn't installed correctly..I don't get it..

The report indicates that the driver installed properly which is very likley the case. The problem is that the driver does not run properly. (Sorry, but there is a difference as you can appreciate from the BSOD problem which is the main topic of this thread.)

Your problem, based on your description seems like it may be related to 1 of 2 things.

1- The graphics card may have trouble initializing the display after the driver loads. Hence the display goes black and stays that way. Things to try depend on your display. For example if you use a DFP and it is connected thru DVI, try connecting with a VGA cable.
OR
2- The graphics card has problems on the the PCIe bus when the driver loads. This could be due to many things. For example failing hardware , ocing the graphics card or system, chipset drivers just to mention a few.

In any case, it would be nice to know more system HW detail (make and model stuff) including the display type and connection before doing any more WAG troubleshooting.
