So now ATI should know what the issue is and fix it ASAP. I'm glad that you liked my fix !!!

Hi, I had my ticket returned from ATI, gave me a good laugh, this is what I put:
"whenever I install your 7.3 catalyst drivers upon rebooting I get a blue screen with wn32k.sys being flagged. I cannot use these drivers as I cannot get beyond the blue screen. I've tried a fresh install of vista with no change but the 7.2's do not have this issue." This was their reply: http://support.ati.com/ics/support/d...asp?deptID=894 So much for them taking it seriously, anyway what we need now is a official response from Terry/ATI, to a proper fix to download. I know that they might need to test it first, however we are talking about operating systems being trashed and possible data loss. Not everyone has the skills to recover from this bsod that is happening... ChrisC

Here's an update from me as well.
I swapped out the X1300 in my system for my wife's X700 and it does it as well, in fact it does it even "faster". With the X1300 I could read the BSOD before it rebooted, with the X700 all I see is a quick blue flash and then poof, reboot. Funnily enough though, I think putting the X1300 in my wife's PC finally fixed the non-stop issue we've had with her system where any DVI based monitor would just stop working after a random period of time. It's still too early to be sure, but so far so good. The only issue now is that X700 are a drop in speed from the X1300 so now my system seems like it's on sleeping pills while gaming for now. *sighs* broke me gets to spend more money on an upgrade soon

Intel P4 3.0 HT, ASUS P4C-800E, 2gb Ram and ATI x850XT
Installing 7.3 causes the system to get stuck in an endless reboot cycle. Disabling the External Event Utility Service seems to be the fix.

Hi, here's an update too: just performing a display driver update from 7.2 to 7.3 and retaining the 7.2 CCC results in the same bsod 5 out of 6 reboots...

Hi all, just joined up to report that similar odd stuff is also happening here and this is after the quick fix tried earlier in the thread.
Catalyst 7.3's still BSOD in Vista and my D downloads partition became corrupt on the same drive, luckily there was nothing important on there. Still, something very damaging is going on with those drivers or interactions with other drivers. No such problems occurred with Catalyst 7.2 or 7.1 After the fix, I no longer get the win32k.sys BSOD but instead the BSOD mentions 'BAD POOL HEADER' and alternatively 'BAD POOL CALLER' at the point where the welcome screen shows. I've even tried safe mode but it rebooted soon after selecting the option. Fortunately, I had an Acronis True Image 10 backup with the 7.2's to restore from. The usual suspect is memory but that has passed 2 days memtest testing and as I've said, no such corruption existed using previous driver versions. ![]() But no matter what the problem is i'm sure ATI will fix it!

I'm getting the same BSOD as well. Spec is :-
C2D E6600 Asus P5B E Mobo 2gb Crucial RAM Sapphire X1950 Pro Ultimate Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Hitachi CML174SX TFT attached via DVI (no adapter) I noticed when I eventually managed to get into Windows that it had also lost the drivers for my Media Center Remote Receiver as well

I got the BSOD on install. But I just played Company of Heroes for 4 hours straight and didn't have any issues. No crashes and better smooth frames for the most part. I even cranked up the shadows to high.
X1900 XTX by the way. I don't know why it just started working ok. I am not complaining of course.

I am also getting bsod with the 7.3 .Did the work around but now I get a lower score in 3dmark 2006 . Went from 6100 with the 7.2 to 4600 with the 7.3. I think the problem comes from the card itself staying at a lower clock speed with the 7.3. I have a x1950xtx and when I start a game the fan spins up but with the 7.3 it does not. Went back to the 7.2 to wait for a fix.

Patiently waiting. In the meantime, I'm back on 7.2's which work fine for me anyways.

I too got the BSOD using Vista Ultimate in dual boot scenario with XP Pro SP2
Rather than fiddle around I uninstalled and reinstalled 7.2 Interesting to note that I complained to ATI/AMD and they are still denying that there is a problem, instead they keep asking me if I have .net 1.1 etc...sorry guys, I've got news, Vista is up to .net 3.0. I finally told them to use Google and check for themselves. P4 HT @ 3.0ghz 4gb RAM 700gb HDD ATI Radeon X1650 Pro AGP Creative SB Audigy 4 |

Yes this one is tricky and seems to involve the timing and sequence with which things occur during the system startup. This is why delaying the External Event Utility has a huge impact on the problem. It may also invole components that not all users have enabled which may explain why our repro took so long in the labs. Of course it will take the SW gurus a while to go thru all the bits and bytes to determine the exact source of the problem. Anyway, we are burning the midnight oil on this one. Believe me when I say that we are very, very motivated and interested in resovling this issue as quickly as possible. Thanks for everyones patience and understanding. Steve (aka CC) |

Well, it is promising when you say that you are working around the clock but still cant understand why there is so big difference between CAT7.2 & 7.3 ?
7.2 doses not have this problem and I cant even remember when I saw so a huge problem in the past I am with ATI from 8500 and this release is the worst ever. |

I figured out the cause of my BSOD's under Vista (which are not the win32k BSOD everyone else was getting) -> latest Intel Chipset Drivers
After fresh install of Vista I installed the Intel Chipset drivers and force updated drivers that didn't install on their own since they were newer than Microsoft drivers. Apparently, Intel's driver for "975x Memory Controller Hub - 277C" doesn't agree with the ATI drivers (or vice versa). Reverting back to the Microsoft driver no longer BSODs when I enable and disable Crossfire. Haven't tried gaming yet, but will do that in a sec. EDIT: Nevermind, after 2 more restarts I got stuck with the BSODs again....argh EDIT2: Reinstalled Vista, but this time I didn't install the Intel chipset drivers and installed 7.3 Cats. I got the win32k BSOD at reboot, but was easily corrected with the ATIStart.bat. Crossfire worked without further BSODs (yay!) So for me it's definitely the chipset drivers. I'm going to try Windows XP (which also got errors) without the chipset drivers and see what happens. Last edited by Dark79; Apr 1, 2007 at 05:49 PM. |

Hi, I wish it was that easy and just down to the chipset drivers, however, as I'm not using the ones from Intel, that doesn't work for me. Good, though Dark79, if it does it for you...
Thanks for the info Zardon, and thanks ATI, for the update... Chrisc

I assume I have the same problem, although my system seems to restart before the BSOD pops up. I'll disable that servcie and see if it works better, but it was rebooting about 4 out of 5 times when i restarted. I thought it was due to my overclocking or a USB device because when I restarted the computer last night it was caught in a reboot loop, probably restarted 10 times before i got pissed off and disable all my overclocking in the bios. Then I noticed it STILL wasn't booting into windows which pisses me off because I just replaced a bunch of defective hardware, so I was wondering if maybe some driver or service was crashing it. So yeah, I just disabled the service and i'm gonna restart a few times to see if it's magically fixed now... I'll add some more info here in a minute.
-edit- Yeah i just restarted 4 times without any problems (twice at stock speed and twice with the cpu/ram settings modified in the bios) so it's pretty safe to say I have the same 'bsod' issue even though I never saw the actual stop error or found anything in the event log. My computer is fairly fast and apparently this issue is something to do with the timing of things on boot, so maybe that has something to do with it. I'm running windows vista ultimate 32-bit. It's installed on part of a raid-0 array and the 1.5 gb swap file is on a gigabyte i-RAM. mobo is msi k8n neo4 platinum cpu is opteron 165 (dual core) 2x512mb crucial ballistix ddr400 2-2-2-6 saphire radeon x1950 xtx dell 2407wfp on dvi acer at3705 on dvi > hdmi adapter (currently disabled) auzentech hda xplosion 7.1 sound ms/razer habu mouse @100hz / 2000dpi, saitek eclipse 2 keyboard on usb since you mentioned something about media player possibly conflicting, i'll mention i have an xbox360 on the same network and it's not set up to 'share' my media with the 360 but it does pop up to say it detected a media center extender or whatever from time to time. Some less common things running as services and drivers that may also be conflicting are 'daemon tools', opti-safe sentinel (ups software), ralink wireless lan card, nmindexingservice (some nero crap i should probably disable), noipducservice (update service for no-ip.com). I also have office 2007 and visual studio 2005 installed. I doubt any of this matters since people are reporting this problem on fresh installs, however. Zardon has suggested that this be posted here in this thread, even though the issue is with Windows XP SP2.
Greetings, I have been faced with much trouble this wkd with these ATI Catalyst 7.3 driver sets for Windows XP 32bit. My issue is this: ![]() Every time I play Armed Assault this BSOD occurs, seems to be only with A.I set to "high". Other games are also doing this. Attempted fixes: Reimaged PC Removed games/reinstalled games Updated directx 9c Ran Memtest for 7hrs - no errors Updated PC with all MS patches inc SP2 I've installed Catalyst 7.2 and the problem has gone away - or seems too. ATI have noted this problem here: http://support.ati.com/ics/support/d...estionID=23354 but only with regard to Windows Vista... this is occurring on XP 32Bit with a ATI x1950 PCIE 512MB. Has anyone else seen this? |

Great to see the Catalyst team are troubleshooting things
I haven't encountered any BSOD (touch wood), but I have had Vista hard locking when exiting games. This has only started since installing the x64 7.3's. Intel C2D 6400, Gigabyte 965P-DQ6, 4 GB GeiL DDR2 800MHz, 4 x 320GB Barracudas, Connect3D X1950XT-X (DVI->HDMI), 32" Mirai LCD

I've been having these exact problems, I didn't know it to be caused by my ATI drivers until now. I did memtest pulled sticks out and everything. These drivers are such a pain. I hope this is resolved quickly!

I'm a bit fed up. I spent nearly £900 on new bits this weekend and built myself a nice quick computer, having read reviews of all the parts I bought. I installed Vista, the popped the graphics card drivers (x1950) on and I get the same problem - bluescreen every time.
I managed to disable the offending service, but it's not really a long term fix. If it helps: Core Duo E6600 2x 1GB OCX Platinum X1950 Pro ASUS P5W DH A light wallet |

dcs49 and drummerh are you on Vista or XP 32bit? There is a thread also at Guru3d about XP SP2 doing the same thing.
