Strange Problem After Installing BF2 on VISTA 32bit with ATI 7.1 Drivers

Hi

Not sure if this is the right thread but it is kinda driver related.

I installed Vista Ultimate few days ago and installed the relevent drivers etc . Everything is working and the CAT's installed with no problems . I installed BF2 and the latest 1.41 patch and rebooted . Played a few games , was messing about with Vista and i noticed when I right clicked on the desktop and selected Launch ATI Control Panel , nothing happened . So I tried launching it from the task bar and it worked fine , again not from the context menu. So I reinstalled the CAT's , rebooted and the same , right click option was not working . BUT this time the ATI icon on the taskbar had dissapeared alltogether .
Also , when i went into Control Panel > Display , there was no inidcation that the CCC was even loading . I just got hte generic windows display options .

... So , because it was a fresh install of VISTA i decided to do a reinstall and see if I could figure out whats happening .

I reinstalled VISTA, installed the CAT's , tested the control panel and it all worked fine . Installed BF2 and 1.41 patchh, rebooted and the right click option stopped working .

So I uninstalled BF2 and rebooted , again no right click . Reinstalled the CATs , still no right click option .

So , I did a system restore back to the point just before I installed BF2 , and the CAT's are working fine again , right click option is working etc .

I find it weird that installing a game is doing this. THe only thing I can think of , is when you run the BF2 installed , it attempts to install DX9.0c and then it stops after a few seconds and completes installation .. Could that be screwing up something ?

Any ideas ?

Thanks guys
Martin

Vista should be protecting the DX files from being tampered with.

Is there some kind of compatibility mode you could run the install in?

Or is there some command line option to skip the DX install when you run the game install?

Hi

I was going to try that . Take a look on the install DVD for just the BF2 installer .

I disabled the AUC (user account control) in VISTA so I might try installing BF2 again and see if that makes any difference.

Yeah i might be able to also run the installer in XP compatability mode .

Right now , I am just using the ATI drivers supplied with Vista , so I was going to install BF2 + Patch , and then install the latest 7.1 CAT'S

Thanks for your reply .

Good luck.

I'm glad I'm not screwing around with Vista. What a hassle.

Maybe after SP1 folks will have better luck with it.

With Vista, it may be a bit too much, at least for now.

I just could not handle all the trouble. I want my machine to work as predicted. With XP, it does, so I have no interest in changing from XP to Vista.

Tips for installing Cats in Vista:

1 - Turn off AV
2 - Turn off UAC
3 - Right click and install as Admin (even if you are one)
4 - Choose Custom install
5 - When the options show up, choose select all and Install.
6 - Reboot when asked

This method works for me everytime.
