What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
I am curious to hear all our regulars views now after spending some time with Windows 7 - what AV client do you rate the most.
Specifically interested to hear what you feel about performance of the client as well. I think I have tried them all, and still rate Avast Professional the highest as it seems to have very few 'false positives' which annoy the hell out of me with some other clients. Also used it since the early vista days and it has never left me down. AVG free is a decent client too if you don't want to spend money. |

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
I don't use anti-virus, and haven't for years.
However, IF I was going to install one, I think I'd go with Microsoft's free one. Back when I was on XP, I started using Windows Defender for anti-malware, and it's been great for keeping malware off my system, and I'm betting the their anti-virus will work just as well, since it probably integrates into the OS much better than the 3rd party solutions. Also, getting Defination Updates through the regular MS Update system makes it easy to stay up to date as well.

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
Avast Home (free). It rarely has anything to do (usually reports the same trojan that my sister always brings from college, not her fault really, and it occasionally warns me about a dodgy web-page), but as far as I know, it's keeping a clean record.
![]() Since the question says "if any" I have to ask if you people think that with UAC antivirus software is no longer necessary?

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
Its a tough one to answer really. I think if you use email on a machine it would be more needed than one without. If people use their browser sensibly I don't think there are many issues with the net anymore. Obviously those dodgy key gen sites and porn sites are risky and there are some sites that use tracking cookies, but you don't really need an antivirus client to stop or remove those anymore.

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
I have used and still use AVG free for 6 years or so now. Have had some minor issues and false positives over that period of time but nothing irreparable. It slows things down some during it's full scan but for the "price" and peace of mind it has been excellent.

Microsoft's Security Essentials (free and seems to work pretty good), Malwarebytes and CCleaner for general temp file clean up and registry cleaner.
IvanV... The way you said that about your sister.... she either gets around way too much or doesn't get around at all depending on how you look at it with having the same Trojan with her.

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
Having run Kaspersky AV for two years with just a couple of weeks left I have been going through a few alternatives to see where my money goes next. I feel it's worth paying for some extra protection so that I can stare danger in the face in case I feel like it for whatever reason. Together with looking at how the different programs behave I have been keeping an eye on the main test reports on www.av-comparatives.org as a guide on how good the core protection really is. It's a great source even if the tests look squarely at the scanning routine, which doesn't paint the whole picture of the more competent AV programs today.
On the cost free alternatives that might interest many I'd primarily go for Avast Home(email registration after 60days) or Avira Personal(nag screen on updates, more false positives). AVG Free is one that if not quite as high scoring on protection, requires no registration and is very easy to use. So onto the commersial editions that I've tried in the last weeks. Kaspersky AV 2010. Has slipped some on the scan test according to results from www.av-comparatives.org but has been secure here and with perhaps the lowest amount of false positives during my own use. That it labels found problems accurately and informatively is also significant to an inquisitive user. However performance has been varying and in its latest version feels heavier on the system than other antivirus software. GDATA. Great detection scores and no wonder since it's essentially two AV databases being used in tandem, currently licensing from Avast and BitDefender. Makes it a bit heavy and to my experience fairly high on false positives. Should be good for "high risk" systems where performance isn't paramount. Panda Antivirus. Not quite famous anymore and while it might possibly be okay I hit the breaks as soon as I saw the old AV software style of leaving lots of processes running that doesn't give back resources when they don't do anything. I mostly tested this because local customers felt it was great. Panda does however have a very neat free USB Memory utility that prevents viruses from spreading that way, go get that one. ESET(NOD32) Felt okay until I noticed that it hard-locked my system every time I connected any kind of USB memory, a problem I've read about some time before but assumed was resolved. Also a bit high on false positives. Still no official Windows 7 support so they might be working on some fixes I guess. F-Secure, BitDefender, Avast : These three all score well on the av-comparatives test but I either haven't yet tested(F-Secure, no trial without registration), tested but forgot exactly why I put it aside(BitDefender, probably okay but not impressive), or already knew from before that it was a valid option(Avast). Norton AntiVirus. To my surprise(even if the 2009 edition was certainly an improvement) the very latest 2010 feels really good. What I mean is that it's fully "modernized" with just a few running processes that do give back resources when idling, and that it has improved at false positives/labeling detections if still not quite like Kaspersky. The interface is also good nowadays even if the main screen has some unnecessary colorful and semi-transparent skinning going on. NAV 2010 is also noticeably faster while covering much the same bases as KAV 2010 when it comes to features beyond mere scanning. I've never appreciated a Norton/Symantec antivirus product as much as I do with this edition. Edit: I must add that if NAV 2010 identifies something as a medium or high risk when you know it's not, there's no way for the user to override that notion. The only exclusion setting is for manual scans. So if you need to even click on a file like that you'll have to temporarily disable the whole protection routine or it will be deleted, which is such a stupid limitation. For now I'll keep using up the trial days of Norton AV 2010. As I doubt that Kaspersky will be able to speed up much in such short a time I might give the latest Avast a thorough run before making a decision. Last edited by mkk; Nov 6, 2009 at 03:55 PM. |

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
I've been using Avira's Antivirus for a couple years now on my personal machines due to the low resource usage, high overall ratings, and daily updates.
Also giving a look at Microsoft Security Essentials at present - its resource usage feels very good, but time will tell still about its effectiveness. Windows Defender together with the Malicious Software Removal tool sit and spin on the machines too for drive-by malware protection duties and removal.

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
I used the Windows 7 beta and RC, but moved back to Vista and haven't upgraded yet to Windows 7. I use NOD32, and I checked now and saw that the latest version (late September) has official Windows 7 support. Haven't tried it lately. Only problem it caused me was when playing with mail integration it somehow managed to destroy my Thunderbird profile, which was very annoying. (And I'm still running the NOD32 competition.)
I used to install AVG free on most PCs in my family, but it had a tendency to sometimes stop working and require manual updates, and since I need to do the support I've recently switched people to Microsoft's solution, which is lighter and seems to need less attention (though only time will tell). |

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
Have used AVG Free for 4 years now and in combination with Windows Defender since it was a Beta. ET3D was correct about it not working now and then which requires a manual update or reinstall sometimes. Still loyal though.
Security Essentials has intrigued me. Might have to try it out.

Only one thing I don't like Security Essentials when trying open notepads or SM9 it slows it down and other programs I work with I gave it up went back to avast.

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
I've tried out many security suites, firewalls and AVs over the year and I've settled with BitDefender Internet Security (2010 for Win7) as I preferred it over all others. There's no easy way to say why, it's more personal experiences and personal preference than anything else and its AV is also highly rated in tests as being accurate. Total Protection, I found, has unnecessary features, much like Vista/Win7 Ultimate. Plus, they give you free upgrades to the latest version for as long as your license is valid (e.g.: I upgraded from 2009 to 2010 for free).
I've also recommended BitDefender at my workplace for the Enterprise product as I preferred its manageabilities and features over the other mainstream Enterprise security solutions (McAfee, Kaspersky, Sophos, etc - McAfee being the cheapest but you get what you pay for; crap).

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
Anyone tried the Comodo antivirus? I remember Comodo from when I tried their free firewall (which gave too many warnings, so I finally uninstalled it). I went there to see if there's anything new, and it looks like they're now offering a free antivirus / firewall solution. See here: Free Firewall - Download the Best Firewall Protection and Anti-Virus Scan Software from Comodo

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
I have the CIS installed including the antivirus but I use it very rarely only to scan suspicious files. From my little experience with it I can tell that it has quite high number of FPs with heuristics set to medium. But it gets much better with Low, which is the default heuristics level for the real-time scanner.
And about the too many warnings from the Comodo firewall - you have to configure it (and the Defense+) the way you want it to behave. In the beginning it may seem too much, but after some tweaking you would hardly notice the CIS is active. |

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
Avira for me, free edition. jus for the low resources and high detection rates. If I was to buy, then kaspersky.
Won't use Avast due to compatibility issues, and AVG rarely detects any USB viruses (last i used it) - which are more and more common now.

avast! Pro. I would be using NOD32 4.0, but as noted it seems to be having.... issues, so I dumped it for now.

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
I'm using two different virus programs on two different computers. Norton AntiVirus 2009 Gamer Edition on my main PC and Microsoft Security Essentials on my laptop. Once the expiration runs out on Norton though I'll probably just switch that to the Microsoft one. Seems to work pretty well.

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
Beside a bug with SSL mail, so I had to turn of email scanning, it works really well. Fast, nice GUI, install doesn't requite a reboot and seems to do it's job.
I would normally never run a beta version of an AV product, but the current Beta is close to release and I haven't had any problems with it. |

Re: What antivirus client do you use (if any) on Windows 7
I use AVG Free works well enough. I have other things that I run every once in awhile just to make sure. I have had a lot of computers come to me with tons of viruses on them. Some of these people have McAffee, Trend or some other substandard program installed and updated. (BOO!! McAffee sucks) We are talking 5 or 6 different viruses, some of them replicating themselves thousands of times. I have already had to reformat some guys pc with win7 on it after he forgot to install anything and went crazy on the porn sites. Don't go to porn sites its bad for you and your computer. I would be very wary not running an antivirus. Even with win 7.

Edit- I missed the all in one so I picked up a two years sub to NIS 2010 again. Its seriously the best paid suite out there at the moment. Its like I have nothing running on my rig and even if its not the best it makes up for it
