Right here goes,
I bought a Radeon X1550 which it looks like I may well have wasted my money. Here I am two months down the line and I am
yet to successfully install a working driver. I Cannot believe how Incompatible the ATI Support Packages are with Windows Vista.
I'm running Vista on a fairly new PC - 3 months old...ish - It's a PC World unit so nothing out of the ordinary.
- Intel Core2 Duo Premium D915
- 2 GB DDRII RAM
- 750 GB Drive
- I have included the Tech stuff at the bottom (dxdiag report)
- Ask me if you need to know anything else spec-wise (simple instructions as to where to find what you're asking for would be appreciated)
So far I must have installed every available version of CCC from 7.1 upwards (Latest 7.10 I believe) a
'good' few times each. It has taken weeks of frustration, this card owes me a bloody holiday, not to mention a good 20 hours labour.
The PC recognises the Graphics card fine.
Every time install the CCC or the ATI display Driver I recieve the exact same error message:
Display Driver Install: The INF file was not found
This occurs while installing the "South Bridge Filter Driver" as per the progress bar text.
PC then re-boots as it should and BAM, groundhog day, back into Vista on VGA mode telling me that the driver is for a previous version of Windows (RUBBISH).
Things I do or have tried:
- I "Run As Administrator" when I install to ensure maximum permissions.
- I have tried installing into folders outside of the "Program Files" folder to avoid any permission related problems (I know Vista's a bugger for this).
- Un-installing an re-installing everything ATI related. Including the manual deletes, folders etc. I have done this more times than I can remember, trying pretty much every version available.
- Installing CCC alternatives such as rad w2kxp omega 38421. No joy.
- I have re-installed all .net framework packages 1, 2 and 3.
- Hell I've even tried a few of the old XP/2000 drivers just for shits and Giggles but no luck with anything.
I am baffled as to what to try next, I heard talk of people attempting to hack the NFO file, duplicate and paste into the installationally relevant folders but no confirmed reports of this being a solution in contrast to the definite reports of it
not working. Either way it seems like a poor solution.
I have trawled the virtual world and whilst this is obviously a very common ATI problem I am yet to see a resolved thread.
Please help me if you can, I know there's an ATI Guru knocking about in here somewhere.
Thanks in Advance
Ryan W
