Catalyst 7.9's... more garbage?
I'm really at a loss to figure out WTF is wrong with ATI/AMD.
The new Catalyst 7.9's for Vista x32 don't even install. I've never had any problems with installing the drivers before, I can't even get the install to go past the "detecting graphics hardware" phase. It just sits there, as long as I let it (2 hours on one attempt). I've downloaded the files, and re-downloaded them several times, so it's not a corrupt dl. I've done several fresh installs, and tried several fresh images, all the same results, the 7.9's just won't install.
It's not my hardware either, every other version installs liquid smooth, no problems... (aside from the nagging problem I am discussing in the "catalyst 7.3 ATIKMDAG errors" thread) Other than that, not a problem (although the ATIKMDAG problem is in fact an aggravating one, with no fix in sight)
Even though the install stops dead when the "detecting graphics hardware" bar is at 50%, the install is still running, but it won't go past it. Furthermore, trying to click cancel or the red "X" results in the prompt to exit the install, but clicking yes does absolutely nothing. I have to go into task-manager and kill the process manually.
I'm not even going to try the x64 versions on this, or my other systems, not worth it anymore. I'm getting tired of having to jump through hoops to get anything ATI to work...
Why does it seem with every release, something else gets broken? Took forever to DL on my limited *broken* i-net connection, let alone the multiple hours now into trying to get them to work (Or should i say, install, haven't been able to see if they work..). It just shouldn't be like this... unacceptable...

Thread restored. But may be up for review from upper brass.
Sorry for any inconvenience.
EDIT: Let me just add this: If it did take 'forever' to download on a 'broken' connection, it very well could be that the dl is corrupted.
Can you provide the exact size of the download?

Thanks for restoring the thread. I couldn't figure out why someone would delete it. I'm only pointing out my problems with the new 7.9's, as well as venting my frustration with trying to get a working driver set for once since the 7.1's.
The size of the download each time is 44.4Mb on disk, (46,559,232 bytes). My connection is "broken" because someone some weeks ago cut the main feeder into my building. Since then I have a temporary set up which is VERY slow, but it is stable with no data loss, so I doubt that would be it.
I've been reading in several places people having nightmares with the new Vista 7.9's with BSOD loops and installs hanging with a BSOD or blackscreen. Mine happened to be a bit different, and not installing at all.
I was attempting to update the post with new info when I realized it wasn't there...
*UPDATE* Manually installed the drivers only, seemed to be fine. Installed the 7.9 package again, went past the detection phase and appeared to install...FINALLY...
upon reboot I was met with a BSOD (which I didn't have time to catch and copy down the particulars) and I again tried to reboot. I got another BSOD and quick black screen, and thats where the entire OS install was hosed... couldn't boot into vista at all, so the system got it's 7.8 catalyst image restored, and everything was fine again (well, as good as it can be at least)
I'm just really tired of "beta testing" the official releases. I build rigs to use for gaming, etc...not for constant OS/driver re-installs...
Junka: Nvidia is having just as many problems, so please... (that's a coment that screams it wants to start a flame war, so if anything should be deleted, mods, PLEASE DELETE THAT!)

OK..everyone, we need to back up and relax a bit. Take a note as to which graphics card is in junka's profile. Maybe a few smilies are in order in his post....although I do agree it's way off topic.
Now, can we all count to 10 and take a deep breath?

Well, I'm trying to play it smart and wait for RC1 for Vista before I do any OS upgrade.
Sooooo....it'll be up to the Vista users here to give you further help.
Good luck!

Ummm, RC1? You didn't mean SP1 did you?
Vista Ultimate x32 hasn't given me any problems really, except for the few WMP54GX's I use on my home network. (No vista support or drivers for them from linksys, but a few tweaks of the XP drivers and they have been solid)
Now Ultimate x64, different story, still way to many issues to use on a daily basis, unfortunately, once you buy it, you're stuck with it if it's opened...
P.S. still been trying to get the 7.9's to install, no go. I haven't a clue as to why they won't, I never encountered this with the Catalyst installer before... I've now tried custom, update and express, I even tried to use the uninstall... custom and express, installer just sits there, not locked up, but not doing anything...

On some machines/set-ups its weird you need both net-framework 1 and 2 to get it to work, don't ask me why, but it seems to be true.
As for Vista I gave up with it until at least SP1, Vista over times bloats up, slows down and eventually dies all together, it seems to be a large problem with about 25% of installs, after reinstalling it for the 3rd time I had had enough, back to my beloved XP for the time being.

It does? seems your copy of vista has some serious issues if this is the case. Not only am I playing every major game with it, but im running a business on a vista machine. a little maintenance (as is the case with every microsoft OS) is needed every so often. Apart from that, its been a more behaved OS than XP ever was.

Ok, instead of ranting, we are going to need more detailed information. If we want the AMD reps in here to help, this is going to be something everyone is going to have to deliver in these threads rather than getting worked up.
Give us your full system and a DXdiag. gives us something to work on.

I know, I know, I have heard all this 1000 times before, note, I did say 25%, check out some off the popular Vista forums you will soon get the drift. I don't think there would be much you could teach me about computer maintenance whether it be hard/software related, my dear chap.

The system specs are over there. (as well as posted many times in the thread I referenced my only other problem)
<-------
(Currently only 2Gb memory installed for testing purposes, 7.8's installed)
As far as a DXDiag report, I can't attach it, to big, I can't post it, to large. (and I can't link to it until all of my services are restored, such as my webspace with my isp...)
But I'll copy the relevant parts of it, maybe it'll help...

and on that note, I'm off to nap, I nodded off in my chair while messing around with the other system and typing this, several times already... I was just awakened by the "ding" of my e-mail alerting me to another post in the thread... Besides, I can't see straight enough to do anymore at this point...

no im sure I could teach you nothing. then again i seemingly am one of the few people who can get vista running better than XP on a variety of systems, so I guess im doing something right. I do tend to listen to others though so i think thats a good starting point.
