At a guess I would say that Vista only rolls over and dies on certain systems, configurations/ chip sets, I really don't have a clue which, only the mighty Microsoft can answer that one, but with a little bit of luck this will be fixed in SP1, I do hope so because for the short time Vista runs it runs well and I really got to enjoy the Vista experience. it would be a shame if I and others had to wait until SP2.

Nothing like a nice bit of sarcasm to brighten my day!! I have to say I've had only a very few minor issues with Vista 64 andno issues with the new Cats...

hmmm
I ran through several installs of the 7.9's already and i've yet to get a installation hang on them... However i have experienced this before...
Curious however, any 3rd party firewalls/virus scanners, any hack protections of any sort...
Have you tried running through the task manager and KILLING all non "default" microsoft vista services and startup processes...
In the attempts to get the catalyst to install once before, i ran through to START~>RUN (or in the case of it not being listed there, push and hold the WINDOWS key and then puch R to get this up).... type in MSCONFIG
hit enter
go to the services tab and then click "HIDE NON MICROSOFT SERVICES".... there could be a number of things listed here, disable them all and hit apply, then go to the STARTUP TAB and see what listed here, Disable them all, hit apply. then hit ok...
Restart, try again... see what happens. Could be some program conflict of sorts...

This is new upon installing 7.9...
Which it turns out its to let you know about driver updates.
Theres one thing that really annoys me with MS after uninstalling Catalyst 7.8. It's not ATI's fault but I noticed from installing Vista a long time ago, it installs drivers on my x1950's as x1900 default Vista drivers.
What creates the pain is upon uninstalling any Catalyst is, because of MS assigning drivers for the wrong card after uninstall I'm presented with a black screen and can not get out. Cannot access the desktop either. Luckily enough for me because XP is on the other partition, I could copy over DriverCleaner and wipe them in safe-mode which gives me back the desktop.
Why do MS create such complications, I really wish MS would not install drivers. They create more harm than good. I couldn't imagine what I'd have to do if I didn't have XP on the other drive with DriverCleaner.

I havent had a hang installing this set on either my 1900 system or my 2900 system. I did get it take a huge length of time to install them once but havent been able to replicate it since.

I sorted out the issue with installing the 7.9's. I'm not sure if it was an issue with the hardware detection, or it was related to something else, with the software, but it apparently didn't like the MB bios I had updated to.
It was the only thing I have changed as far as hardware since the last drivers(7.8's, and they installed fine), so I didn't think of it right away until I sat there and went over what could be causing the issue, and gave it a shot.
I was using the 2301 (beta I believe) Bios for the P5W DH, I went back to the 2206 for this board and several "anomalies" I've been experiencing went away. (few others were random BSOD's for hardware failures, and the inability to disable the on-board HD audio, going back to the 2206 bios fixed everything, I changed nothing else.)
I don't understand why the bios would have anything to do with installing the video drivers, but as I fathom a guess, maybe something to do with the hardware detection? I don't know...
P.S. still have the fan problems with my card, no different with the 7.9's, but they aren't any worse than the 7.8's.

Thanks for the update!
Yes, there may be a reason that BIOS is called, 'beta'.

Hi there.
After many hours of reinstalling, I found a solution for installing Catalyst 7.9.
1 - Delete folder "c:\Program Files\Ati";
2 - Download Catalyst 7.6 and install only Catalyst Install Manager (CIM);
3 - Download Catalyst 7.9 and start installation. It will freeze. Kill the process InstallManagerApp.exe using task manager (ctrl+shift+del);
4 - Copy all files from "c:\Program Files\Ati\CIM\Bin" to the folder created by ati installer (usually "C:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-9_vista32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_52447\Driver\Bin";
5 - Install Catalyst 7.9 using "C:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-9_vista32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_52447\Driver\Bin\Setup.ex e".
Done.
Worked very well fore me.
