Some bloke with a sense of humour has registered himself as gabenewell2004 on eBay and set up an auction. The goods for sale? Nothing less than
Valve itself! Here's an excerpt:
For this, we are sorry, but the main reason we are selling, is the half life 2 debacle. The truth is, it doesn't exist. The thing is, Half Life was created using the Quake engine, which is relatively simple, and didn't take too much work to get sorted out into a game. I can't code, and when we decided to create half life 2, we found out that the people actually expected us to have a decent engine, and shiny graphics. We quickly photoshopped some 'screenshots' from magazines of other games like Doom 3, and with the millions that we had inherited from Half Life sales, we paid actors to dress up in cartoonish suits, and pretend to shoot each other on videos that we then released to the public.
At post time, the bidding is stuck at £10,000,000.00. hile obviously a joke auction, there is some better hidden humour in all of this. A quick click of the Bid History reveals that one
gabe_newell has bid on the auction several times. While there may be many Gabe Newells in this world, there are probably only a few that can afford the three and four digit knives this particular eBayer has bid on. Kudos to Gabe for a sense of humour in bidding in this auction!
In case the auction is gone before you have a chance to check out the fun, we have archived screenshots of the auction
here for posterity.
