I'm using a Yamaha P80 digital piano hooked up to the MIDI input of Gigastudio 3 (using kx project drivers on a Creative sound card) and the Emperor piano set. The problem is I can't get it loud enough, even if I turn all the volume controls to the max, in both the kx drivers and in all the DSP panels in Giga. Despite having set the keyboard touch to 'soft' it still takes too much force to send maximum velocity. So, how can I raise the velocity of the MIDI stream, and what are other places to try to turn up the volume?

A couple of things...

I recall theres parameters for how velocity affects the sample in various ways (envelope gen, pitch envelope, filter envelope etc..)
This is most likely part of giga 'layer' editing and thus *could* be per layer - but there should also be some 'global' settings too.

Giga specific real-time sound edit / controllers set properly?
CC#7 is set to full (Midi channel Volume = 127)
CC#11 is set to full (midi channel Expression = 127)
These are general midi, Not sure what is specific to giga, there may even be ones specific to a patch within giga?? - Its been a while since I played around with giga, ..Oh and giga has some 'midi processing' stuff too - Id look at that too.

Tip: in low-cost keyboards you don't have to use 'force' (meditate on the word 'velocity' ). I don't know, whether your piano has good and realistic touch-sensors (if it does - good for you!); as for me, when I lay my hands on cheap Yamaha PSR-510, it takes fast finger motions to produce high-velocity MIDI commands. This concept is usually confusing for people who delt with real pianos in the past, but have no experience with electronic keyaboards, and in frequent case you could strike with all the force you can - getting mellow, soft sounds just because you don't strike fast enough; and a minute later you could accidentally produce loud note while playing pianissimo - just you striked soft but fast. Playing 'plastic' keyboards takes some time to get into.

Sorry it took so long to respond - but I had technical difficulties and browsing the forums was a bit too tedious - and I missed this

Anyway - where you find these settings depends on the keyboard. Sometimes even the patch thats selected.

Volume is pretty common to have a dedicated slider that controls this right on the keyboard - but not to be confused with an amplifiers volume, but I dont think the P80 is such a keyboard. Some keyboards have 'assignable' controllers - yup, assignable to a Midi CC message - there are 128 possible CC controllers btw (reverb ammount = CC#91, chorus ammount = CC#93 - according to the general midi spec - GS too I believe - are just a couple more examples)

Now expression is often a foot controlled thing - like a volume pedal.
Some patches may assign the mod wheel (if you have one) - it all depends - its what makes MIDI so versatile.

But - most keyboards can send and accept midi CC messages to emulate sliding those knobs and foot pedals - so we can record them in a sequencer.

The manual for the piano and gigstudio should be at your side at all times until you catch on to some of these things. I still to this day, refer to my manuals for some things - so even when your confortable - dont throw them manuals away.

And it seems some midi functions have been overlooked/removed - as its not a dedicated controller - but a digital piano - theres maybe more difference than you realize?? but its a common mis-understanding too.
