I don't think I can even get an ATI card to work under FreeBSD. . .

Isn't X1600XT PCIe? I would think whoever runs a card bought before 2005, runs AGP... Give them a X850XT PE instead.
Edit: Also, does ATI suport X1k series under Linux yet?
