5950 v 9800 xt

Elite Force 2 is one of the latest games to be released using the Quake3 engine. As with all other Q3 based games you can record and playback your own demos. And if you wish, use these demos to benchmark graphics performance. The Driverheaven custom timedemo uses 5 bots and the Base Trophonious arena to ensure the benchmark is GPU dependant and limited as little as possible by the test system CPU. The length of the demo when played back at 1x speed is approx 9 minutes.

This is the first review that we have done which compares the FX and Radeon range where the Radeon part is actually able to keep up, and in some cases exceed the FX in Elite Force 2. In this case it would appear to be a mixture of 2 things. Firstly the XT seems to benefit from the extra speed over the Pro more than the 5950 does over the 5900 and secondly there may also be some improvement in the Open GL driver within the Catalysts.

Aquamark3 uses DirectX9 features such as Pixel Shader 2.0 and a real world game engine to allow users to test their system under heavy graphic load. Results can then be uploaded to an online database and compared to other users systems. The default benchmark runs at 1024x768x32 with no Anti-Aliasing and 4x Anisotropic filtering. Detail levels are set to maximum. The results of this test are displayed as frames per second, triangles per second and the main Aquamark3 TRISCORE. The TRISCORE shows the performance of your CPU and GPU and finally gives your overall score for the benchmark. As Aquamark is not prone to other processes affecting the scores it provides reliable and comparable results.

Using Aquamarks default benchmark settings the XT comes out ahead again in this test. The difference here is relatively small, 1078 points which is 2.4%. Let’s see how the FPS are at maximum detail within Aquamark at 1600x1200 and using 4xAA 8xAF:

Both cards are really pushed at these settings in Aquamark, the difference of 4fps is 19% extra performance wise from the Radeon.
