Half-Life
2 Episode 1 is the first in a series of games
that chronicle events after the end of Half-Life
2. The game engine is of course Valves “Source”
however unlike the original Half-Life 2 valve
have progressed on to the more advanced level
with the addition of some excellent HDR lighting
which combines very well with the existing engine
to produce some lovely looking visuals which are
at times mind blowing.

Episode
1 is a typical representative of current games
– it depends heavily on pixel shaders. Running
with no image enhancements the performance was
acceptable, especially considering HDR was on.
Enabling AA and AF lowered the performance somewhat,
but the game remained entirely playable –
not bad for a low budget card. Intense combat
scenes maintained the same frame rate, showing
that the card can handle several particle effects
on the screen with ease.
