Something
quite odd happened with the reference card (740Mhz/825Mhz
) that AMD sent us, as attached to the card was
a cardboard label saying “850/1020”
which would seem to indicate AMD's suggestion
for a maximum overclock and so with this
in mind we headed into our overclocking adventure.
The recommended overclocking tool in the press
ftp was Powerstrip, however just to be a little
awkward (not for the first time with this launch
it has to said) AMD neglected to tell everyone
that there was a limit of 900Mhz on the memory
when using Powerstrip and therefore we had to
use “AMDGPUCLOCKTOOL_v0.7”
to reach the cards full potential.
Before
looking for the maximum overclock on the card
we took a brief look at the overdrive performance
and found that really there was only a minor increase
over the stock scores, so minor that it really
wasn’t worth enabling.
Overclocking
manually we found that the highest stable OC to
be 865/1026 on our Asus sample and 863/1029 on
the Sapphire card. Due to the tiny variance in
speeds there was no noticeable difference in performance
between both cards when overclocked.
