With over clocking becoming a widely accepted mainstream hobby, memory companies are releasing more extreme solutions every year. This year has seen a rapid increase in the "funky" cooling sector (no, I just made that up, its not really a sector). It wouldn't be like OCZ to miss the party, so today we are looking at a 2 GB overclocking kit they released, called "The Reaper".

For those of you expecting the modules to arrive in a grim reaper style package complete with cape and scythe, you will be disappointed. It is the same boring plastic packaging OCZ have been using for the last decade. Joking aside, it offers adequate shipping protection and is substantially larger than previous designs to house these oversized modules.

The 1GB modules are rated 9200, with timings of 5-5-5-18. For those interested that is a rating of 1150mhz. They are Micron D9GMH (B6-3) Chips.

OCZ have been at the forefront of memory cooling solutions this year, with the famous FLEX XLC (Xtreme liquid convection) modules becoming a firm favourite with many watercooling enthusiasts. Gaming Heaven have a competition still running (until the end of May) to win a set of these modules.

With the Reaper HPC, each side of the modules have a solid black heatspreader and a heat pipe conduit at the top to house a heat pipe. Heat pipes are often used on enthusiast motherboard's so it is an interesting concept to carry this over to a memory cooling solution. As heatpipes get hot, the liquid inside begins to boil which results in the heat moving away from the source. You will obviously never "just" have a heatpipe as it needs a fin structure to dissipate heat. On the Reaper HPC there is a single heatpipe with a fin array the the top, so in theory it is the perfect cooling design. They are however extremely "tall" at 66mm.

The modules are designed to be used in dual channel mode, and they boast 2.3V nominal voltage. At this voltage setting they are claimed to handle 5-5-5 timings at 2T command rate. The more observant amongst you will already realise that these timings are the same as the FlexXTC Edition, and they also have exactly the same manufacturer guarantee to 2.35 volts.
