A few months back we had the opportunity to review Noctuas excellent CPU coolers the NH-U12 and U9, and we were more then pleased with the results we achieved. Now it’s time to have a look at another new product from Noctua; their 120mm fans: NF-S12-1200 and NF-S12-800.
Noctua arises from a cooperation
between the Austrian Rascom Computer distribution
Ges.m.b.H and the Taiwanese Kolink International Corporation
and entertains a development partnership with the
Austrian Institute of Heat Transmission and Fan Technology
(Österreichisches Institut für Wärmeübertragung
und Ventilatorentechnik, ÖIWV). These connections
form the key to the achievement of our goal: The partnership
with the ÖIWV permits the application of scientific
measurement instrumentation, methods of calculation
and simulation technology in the R&D process.

The 120mm fans come in nicely coloured packages.
The Noctua NF-S12 fans come in two flavours, the S12-800 and S12-1200 and as you probably already have guessed the numbers at the end would be the revolutions per minute (RPM) the fans spin at. The printing on the packages don’t give away the specific version of the fans, you have to flip it over and look at the label on the side of the package.
Inside the paper package you’ll find another see through plastic wrap in which all the accessories are neatly packed.
Here is one the fans out of the box with all the accessories alongside it, including mounting screws, four rubber Vibration Compensators, 3:4-Pin Adaptor and the Ultra-Low-Noise Adaptor (U.L.N.A.).
The U.L.N.A is simply a 149 Ohm resistor that lowers the volts to the fan.
Here’s a close up on one of the rubber vibration compensators, these are used instead of the regular screws to avoid fan vibrations resonating in the case.
