With more and more video
being released in high definition/quality formats
the playback of such content is becoming a much
more common task to perform on the average PC.
Whilst the quality of these files is excellent
compared to SD content the processing power required
to decode the video is quite high and therefore
the better the CPU the less chance there will
be of a reduction in playback smoothness, especially
when multitasking. The 8800 can assist playback
with hardware acceleration.

The fact that we are using
a quad core CPU for this testing keeps the CPU
usage pretty low under normal circumstances. Enabling
GPU acceleration still has quite an impact on
the overall performance of our test system. Max
cpu usage is most affected by the enabling of
our GPU for playback with the WMV-HD clip benefiting
most with a drop from 39% cpu usage to 12.5% cpu
usage.
