As PC’s become even further engrained into everyday life; our reliance on their convenience continues to increase. An ever increasing number of us have become accustomed to day to day interaction with our friends and family thanks to the internet. Because of this heavy reliance on technology, adding a UPS to your home setup is quickly becoming a choice that many of us would have never considered until now. Ultra who are well known for their modular power supplies have recently expanded their lineup of UPS products. Today we have a chance to take a look at the big daddy of their lineup the 2000VA UPS.

The Package

When the massive package arrived the Courier was glad to hand it over.

The UPS was very well packaged as the image below shows. Inside the box there is a top and bottom designed to specifically fit the UPS to protect it from any shipping damage. These protective covers prevent any movement of the contents.

Pictured below is the front panel of the UPS, a side shot and the rear panel of our test unit. It weighs in at 32 lbs and is roughly ¾ of the depth as the chassis of our test PC. This UPS is something you wouldn’t want to be dragging with you to a LAN party unless it was an absolute must.

Why a UPS?

As we become more dependent on computers, the amount of money people are investing in their computer purchases has skyrocketed. Not only do they serve the normal functions people think of like word processing, surfing the internet and playing games but they have become very common place in living rooms around the world as the centerpiece of a home entertainment setup.

Most home users tend to rely on the use of a Surge protection device. These devices can range from a mere $20 to a much more substantial $200 depending on the number of devices that they allow you to connect to it and the level of protection it offers. All they can do is protect you from surges but variance in our power input like brownouts can often trip a surge protector and not leave you any time to save that report you worked all night on.

This is where the UPS fits into the picture. Most of us think of an office computer being the main device when involving a UPS. Cooperation’s use them to protect application critical machines, database servers and anything else they feel deserves this type of protection. So with that in mind Ultra has introduced their new lineup of UPS which they hope will become a much more common device used by everyday people to protect their hard earned and often expensive investments.

All of those sweet new toys like that new 30” Widescreen LCD panel or Plasma TV can only benefit from the protection that a UPS can provide. How annoyed would you be if an electrical storm passed through overnight and somehow destroyed all your lovely hardware? You would be left to do battle with an insurance company to get replacements. Thanks to the battery power a UPS provides you can in theory continue after a power failure if it’s an absolute must. The thing to look for when buying a UPS is the VA rating. This rating will determine how many minutes you have to finish what you are doing before you have no choice but to shut down.
