The Vanessa S-Type comes in quite a large box for
a CPU cooler. The exterior of the box is carefully
designed, naming in detail all of the features and
specifications of the cooler, although I believe
in fact that the somewhat underdressed Vanessa is
much more likely to draw your attention rather than
the specifications if you are browsing inside a
store. I would guess that the packaging certainly
meets half of the requirements, which is drawing
your attention, so let us see if it also meets the
other half, that being protecting the merchandise.
By opening the box you will find everything contained
inside a piece of plastic, nicely supported and
separated. Great attention was given on the package,
so it will both draw attention and will protect
the included items even if the exterior is badly
deformed.
The Vanessa S-Type comes with a rich bundle. First
of all, you will get a lot of retention brackets
and screws, since the Vanessa S-Type can be mounted
on every currently available socket.
For help during the installation, there is a very
well illustrated and detailed installation manual.
The Vanessa also has a fan controller, which can
be mounted either in a 3.5” bay or a PCI slot.
Titan includes of course all of the necessary material
and brackets for installing the fan controller wherever
you prefer. Finally, there is a tube of Nano Blue
thermal grease, a good thermal material which I
will use myself later while testing the unit.
The Vanessa S-Type is fairly large for the “small”
version of a cooler. Measuring 15cm high, it is
somewhat of a tower. I doubt that it will fit inside
most desktop cases. The design of the Vanessa S-Type
is fairly common; there is a small copper base where
three long heatpipes move through, transferring
the heat away from it to the aluminum fins. The
common design does not make it simple however, and
someone took the aesthetics into deep consideration
here. The whole unit is nickel plated, down to the
last of the 45 aluminum fins. All of the fins are
cut to resemble the shape of a butterfly and on
the top of the cooler there is a nice sticker. All
of the heatpipes ending on top of the heatsink are
covered with blue caps. The base of the heatsink
is a perfect mirror as you can see from the above
picture; not only has it reflected the image of
the coin that I placed on my table, but every last
detail of the table down to the scratches on the
wood.
The Vanessa S-Type is cooled by an adjustable 92mm
fan. The fan itself has a blue frame and nickel
plated fins. At first glance you may mistake the
fan for metallic, but it is all plastic, simply
very well painted. The installation of the fan on
the cooler is very easy as you simply have to clip
the fan on the heatsink, the retention clip of the
fan is already installed on it.
The mounting of the Vanessa S-Type on a socket
939 motherboard is very easy. First, you have to
remove the two screws of the stock retention bracket.
Then, without removing the bracket itself, you simply
place a thin layer of thermal compound on the CPU
and place the cooler on it. Then by using the provided
retention clip and the two long screws, you firmly
screw the cooler in place. Finally, you clip the
fan on the cooler and you are ready. On socket 478
and 775 motherboards the installation will be somewhat
harder, as you have to remove the motherboard from
the case. For socket 478 you will have to remove
the stock retention bracket for using the provided
one as well. That does not make the installation
hard; it will just take you 15 more minutes.
