One item that really does make the Kandalf chassis quite unique, is the ability to move the drive bays, the accessory box, the 3 x 3.5" internal HDD module containing it’s own 12cm fan, and a drive tray which utilizes a power off/on button, reset, and activity LED’s. It really is quite easy to move these around however you like.

We’ve already taken a look at the removable hard drive cage which resides at the rear top of the case near the power supply exhaust fan. Now it is time to examine the internal hard drive module sporting room for three separate 3.5" hard drives, with a 12cm fan. This 12cm blue LED lit fan is also moveable to a location you choose like the other drive bays mentioned earlier. The fastening mechanisms for the bay drives will be explained a bit later in this review. Here are some pictures of this front HDD module as designed by Thermaltake.

The screwless slots ensure easy assembly when installing add-on cards, like a PCI Express graphics card, or PCI card. In a quite ingenious and fool proof design, Thermaltake uses the large green plastic clips to lever back and forth, with audible 2 level clicks to indicate position of the clip itself. The clip once engaged will firmly hold any card in place, although the user does have the option to use a screw to attach the PCI device like normal (manual dexterity is a necessity here due to small work space in and around the green plastic clips). I had no problems at all attaching an EVGA 7800 GTX KO PCI Express video card in the slot using this feature of the case.

Here’s a picture of the back I/O panel before actual installation took place, with the clips mentioned in the previous paragraph.

For a quick review of the chassis design, I included this diagram from Thermaltake showing the general internal structure of this Kandalf case.

1) Removable HDD cage
2) Tool-free installation for 5.25" devices
3) Dual USB 2.0, IEEE 1394 Firewire, Audio & Speaker ports
4) Moveable front control panel (Power, Reset switch, HDD & PWR LED’s)
5) Screwless slots for easy assembling
6) Three x 3.5" HDD module with 12cm fan
7) Retractable foot stand
8) Accessory box - Bundled in 5.25" drive bay
9) HDD & FDD rack
10) Movable HDD & FDD drive bay
11) Ventilation opening on top (62% opening ratio)
12) Extra large thumb screws for easy open side panel
13) Side Panel lock

The bottom of the case is also perforated with many holes, and you can see the adjustable feet which swing out to support the case if needed.

Above is a picture of the clam shell door opening and you can see the effects of the subtle blue LED lightning effects.

This is how the case looked once turned upright before any equipment was installed. The accessory box is easily found and you can see the pre-wiring from Thermaltake from the front of the case. Below is another beauty shot furnished by Thermaltake, with the image on left depicting the bezel doors removed and the decorative screws in their place, and on the right you see the can effect with the well designed and heavy clam shell opening doors.

Here are the drive holding plastic clips that were mentioned earlier in the review – depicted below. You just squeeze the clip inward and lift to release, and reverse the process to hold the drive in place.

4 plastic grommets are provided for water cooling endeavors, and if used, are placed in lieu of 4 small aluminum cut-outs which are located at the base of the 90mm exhaust fan from the removable hard drive cage. The grommets allow a safer retaining hole mechanism for running your water cooling loops.
