System setup and thermal performance:
• CPU: Athlon 64 AM2 4600+ EE
• Motherboard: MSI K9V6GM-V
• HDD: Seagate ST3320620AS
• VGA: Sapphire Radeon X800
• PSU: Linkworld LPE 400W

In order to test the thermal performance of the case, we took temperature measurements while the system was powered and working placed on a motherboard box beside the desktop and then we compared them with the readings we got when the system was installed inside the case, fully assembled. We used two external thermal sensors to take readings from the video card (back of the chipset) and ambient temperature. The chipset and CPU temperature readings are taken from the motherboard sensors. Finally, the hard disk drive temperature reading is taken from the internal HDD sensor, via the speedfan utility. Idle readings were taken after the system was left at the windows desktop for 10 minutes. Load readings were taken after running PcMark05 concurrently for one hour.

For a cost effective case, the Bergwind II offers good thermal performance. With only a single 80mm exhaust fan at the rear of the case, it could maintain decent temperatures, except perhaps for the HDD. The HDD drive temperatures are still fine, but we would be reluctant to install 3 or more HDDs at the front of the case without installing an intake fan at the very least. Replacing the rear 80mm fan with a 120mm fan would also aid the cooling capabilities of the case tremendously.

Final words and conclusion

We did not have great expectations from the Bergwind II; after all it is a case which costs less than 30 euros. But for such a low price budget case, we found its craftsmanship to be surprising. It is not loaded with special features or tool less device locking mechanisms, but it is a simple, lightweight and aesthetically appealing case nonetheless. For building a cost-effective system, we can find no reason why this case should not be on your shortlist.

It is not all good however, with the main negative being chassis durability. It is solid, but not enough to withstand an accident or any kind of hit. Surprisingly, the paint is very good and won’t be scratched that easily, but the metal panels of the case feel so thin and easy to bend that the plastic faceplate ironically feels more durable than those.

Because of the very good value that the Bergwind II offers, we have awarded it the Driver Heaven Shortlist award.
