N-Bench was recently released by AMD, as it is created by the makers of the 2 chips we are comparing here it makes sense to use it as a test.

Opteron 146, 4x512mb, IDE HD, FX 5950U

Some interesting results in this test. Looking at the CPU tests first the Athlon XP is ahead of the Opteron in all but one of the tests (Integer 2 – Mandelbrot). This is most likely due to the Mhz advantage that the XP has over the Opteron. In the integer 2 test the Opteron gains enough of a lead to score higher overall than the XP despite being slightly slower in the 3 other tests.
Moving on to the 3D Benchmarks (which use Direct X 9) we can see the first signs that the Opteron may be an excellent system to game on. In all but the Starfighter test it is ahead of the Athlon XP.

The overall scores show an advantage in favour of the Opteron. 2704 to 2592.
