OCZ Reaper X

Initially it may look like the OCZ ReaperX DDR2-800 modules do not have much of a selling point when the HyperX modules outperform them in nearly every test. It is only when we look at the overall product and possibilities that the true advantages of the Reaper sticks become clear. Firstly we must point out that although performance was slower than the Kingston memory it was never a huge difference and the tighter timings used by OCZ do help the modules keep up. Additionally, when overclocked the sticks come very close to matching the HyperX.

The two main selling points in our opinion cannot be seen by looking at performance graphs. These selling points are ease of configuration and future options. With the OCZ sticks anyone using a board which supports EPP will find that this memory works at the advertised settings without any configuration. Additionally the fact that these are 2 GB modules means that they can be used in a four slot motherboard to create an 8 GB configuration. As programs become more memory hungry this could be a real advantage.

What do these awards mean?

OCZ Reaper X can be bought for £105 OCUK and for $159 NEWEGG

Kingston Hyper X

The Kingston HyperX DDR2-1066 modules produced some very impressive performance figures and while they do not feature SPD profiles for their advertised settings we had no problems configuring them to run at DDR2-1066 with 5-5-5-15 timings. Something which does not come across well in the pictures is how nice these modules look, in the “flesh” they appear very professional and would be at home in any system with a case window. Combine the great looks and excellent performance  with a very competitive retail price and it is possible to configure four modules in a 4 GB configuration for about £150.
