PCMark04 continues the approach used in PCMark2002, that being a benchmark which uses System and Component benchmarking. By running the system benchmark users can gain an overall impression of how their system will run in the home environment. Component benchmarking allows the user to isolate specific components (such as memory or CPU) for testing.

Some excellent scores from the OCZ memory, whilst its slightly behind the Corsair at DDR400 the difference is only minor. The difference in memory also allows the Athlon FX to score slightly higher also. This type of score difference should show around 2seconds or so in real life tasks such as video encoding, we’ll see later in the review if this proves to be the case.

Adobe Photoshop is the premier standard image editing software. Used by professionals and novices world around it is the most powerful Image software available. Thanks to Allan "Zardon" Campbell we now have a standard Adobe Photoshop benchmarking script for use here at Driverheaven. The scripts main purpose is to isolate and stress a CPU alone and give us the results.

The action script is setup to apply certain filters and includes some professional editing commands. It is set not to go into layers. If you apply several layers to a large file then paging will occur and then the hard drive comes into play. Which means the CPU itself is not stressed. The basis for this bench is to stress only the CPU as much as possible.

The bench is run with a 40 MB file. The DH action script is already loaded in the actions pane. The image is loaded and then timed with the built in timer in Adobe.

In our Photoshop bench the OCZ, despite using the same timings as the Corsair is again running a little slower than the Corsair at DDR400 speeds. If your doing a lot of work in Photoshop with your AthlonFX then this difference could mount up and save you some considerable time.

ImTooDVD allows you to convert DVD’s into more manageable formats such as DivX or SVCD. In our test we take a 225mb Vob file and convert it to DivX. The frame rate and time are taken using Imtoo’s built in reporter.

Considering the size of the file in question the results in this test are very close. They do show the small difference in speed that we expected when we saw the PCmark results however this difference would really only be noticeable in real life when your converting a full DVD, then you’d be looking at a difference in total encoding time of 1minute or so.

One of our favourite FPS of recent times, Farcry stresses your system more than any other game currently available. For this reason its an excellent game to test with. Our test uses 1024x768 0xAA 0xAF so as not to create a graphics card bottleneck.

Performance difference is much lower when gaming than the other tests we’ve run. In this test there really isn’t a noticeable difference when playing, an excellent result for OCZ.
