Packaging and bundle

The packaging of the ProXstream is certainly very simple, especially when compared to that of other units in its price range. Still, the package is well designed and notes most of the unit’s features on it, in detail. The protection it offers to the contents could be improved though. We found no Styrofoam pieces or anything else between the walls of the box and the unit itself. A strong hit, especially from an edged item, will most certainly cause damage to the unit. Bundle wise, it leaves a lot to be desired. There is only an AC power cable, a few black 3M screws and a manual which is not bad but certainly could use some improvement. We understand that there are not a lot of things a company can bundle with a power supply, but a few cable management wraps or accessories would be nice, especially for a unit with such a high price tag.

The Unit

Despite its monstrous power output and unlike most other units coming from known brands, the ProXstream is pretty small. It does not exceed the ATX specifications at all. Besides the titanium chrome plating of the chassis and the number of cables coming out of it, there is nothing else betraying its high class and extreme power output. The unit itself is very simple, cooled by a single 80mm fan. There is not even an on/off switch, not because it was overlooked but as you will soon see, there was no room for one inside the unit. The ProXstream was clearly not designed with good looks or acoustic performance in mind; it is a simple unit which only aims to deliver a great amount of power and remain stable at all times.

The entire front part of the unit is perforated, designed to allow the fast (and noisy) 80mm exhaust fan to draw air in from the inside of the case. A sticker can be found at the right side of the unit, listing its specifications and certifications. Stickers are usually found at the left side of the chassis, but we think OCZ did the right thing here as it will keep the PSU looking clean inside the case. The ProXstream is not a modular unit and there are a lot of cables! Besides the standard ATX 24-pin and CPU 8-pin cables you will also find four PCIe 12V cables, two SATA cables with 3 connectors on each and two Molex cables with 3 Molex connectors and 1 floppy connector on each.

The insides of the ProXstream unit are certainly crowded. The design of the unit is very similar to that of PC Power & Cooling units which we examined in the past. While it does not allow us to take very good pictures of its internals, we are certainly amazed by the number of components and the rigid design of the unit. Very high quality capacitors are used on the primary PCB (this is very important as they will be taking most of the load) but the capacitors found on the secondary board are a bit worse, although far from being bad.
