Introduction
OCZ
are widely regarded as making some of the highest
quality RAM modules. Today we will take a look
at a very interesting set of DDR2 RAM modules
which are supposed to offer great performance
with a very aggressive price tag, the Special
Ops Edition series PC2-7200 (900MHz) set. Can
OCZ offer both great performance and great value
in a single package?

Packaging
The modules packaging is
the same simple, clear plastic package which OCZ
is using for all of their dual channel sets. The
modules are almost weightless and very hard to
damage during transportation, so the package is
more than enough protection for them.
The
modules
The
Special Ops Edition modules can be easily recognized
by their camouflage heatspreader. While the camouflage
heatspreader does look nice, it is nothing more
than a fancy paintjob on their standard XTC heatspreader.
Nonetheless, modders and gamers (especially gamers
who play games like Battlefield and Counterstrike
a lot) will find the looks very appealing. Funnily,
our modules read ‘Speecial Ops Edition’
on their stickers, not often you see printing
mistakes like this, but we are sure this will
be fixed by the time they hit the shelves.
With
regards to performance claims, the PC2-7200 modules
would fall into the “above average zone”.
They boast an operational speed of 900MHz with
5-5-5-15 timings and 2.1V. These numbers aren’t
going to satisfy the hardcore overclockers, but
they are more than enough for budget minded enthusiasts
and casual gamers. We do believe that the OCZ
PC2-7200 Special Ops Edition can do somewhat better
than that though, so we are going to do some vigorous
testing and overclocking on an Allendale platform.
