Packaging and Bundle

The Hiper Type-M units come supplied in an extremely simple but sturdy cardboard box. There is nothing noteworthy about the artwork of the package, but environmental conscious people will be glad to know that it is made out of recycled paper. The unit is well secured inside the box.

The bundle of the Hiper Type-M unit is basic, but not lacking. You will find all of the extra cables and connectors inside a simple plastic bag, the modular AC power cable and both an UK and EU plug and 4 screws. Finally you will find a basic user’s guide and two stickers with the company logo.

The Unit

It appears that the basic design of the Type-M units is very much alike the design of the Type-R units. The perforated chassis is physically identical, although painted with a simple matte black color instead of having a reflective, chrome-like look. The quality of the paint is good though, it is well sprayed and hard to scratch. The perforated chassis will aid the thermal performance of the unit. At both of the sides of the unit, Hiper’s logo is subtlety engraved on the perforated chassis, although it may be hard to notice because of the black paint.

Half of the rear of the unit is perforated, allowing for a portion of the heat generated by the unit to escape to the exterior of your case. Nevertheless, because of the perforated chassis some of the heat will escape from the sides of the unit and back into your case. This may not be a good thing if your case has little to no airflow and houses a power hungry system.

A sticker with the unit’s specifications can be found at the top of the chassis. Although Hiper have decided not to make the units modular, they have tried to improve the cable management of their new units through other means. Instead of feeding all cables out via a single lead, Hiper have made five individual holes at the rear and the cables are managed into their respective plug connector. The cables are sleeved black and the connectors are black as well.

The Type-M unit is cooled by the same monstrous Yate Loon GP 135mm fan which we found in the Type-R units; however this fan is plain black. There are no silver blades or LED lights this time. Curiously, almost half of the fan’s surface is covered by a thin, clean piece of plastic. It seems as if Hiper is trying to guide the airflow to enter mostly from the front part of the unit, however this will reduce the airflow of the fan as well. We found this strange because the perforated sides of the unit will not allow the warm air to be guided exclusively to the exterior of the case through the rear part of the unit, but almost certainly most of the air will escape from the sides of the unit.

The circuit design of the Type-M 630W unit is exactly the same as the one we found in the Type-R units. Matter of fact it bears a remarkable resemblance to the Type-R 680W unit as it has the same heatsinks and the same SamXon capacitors are being used on the secondary circuit. The primary circuit of the unit is a little weaker though, which justifies its lower power rating.
