The Units

The Type-R MKII units are certainly appealing and worthy of attention. While they look much like their predecessors, there is one major difference; the MKII units are not modular. The chassis of the units is almost entirely perforated in order to aid their thermal performance and it is painted with a highly reflective paint. The Type-R MKII units are supplied in electric blue or titanium only at the present time. We received our 880W unit in titanium and the 680W unit in blue.

At both of the sides of the units, Hiper’s logo is subtlety engraved on the perforated chassis. Most people will only notice a slight deformation at first. At the rear of the unit, with the basic on/off rocker switch and the AC power plug there are a total of 9 USB ports. Eight of them can be used as normal USB ports and you can connect any device, given that you connected the PSU’s hub cable to a motherboard internal USB header. The ninth port cannot be used as a data port but it is powered even when the PC is turned off, allowing it to be used as a charging port for an USB powered device such as an MP3 player or PDA.

Although Hiper have decided not to make the units modular, they have tried to improve the cable management of their new units through other means. Instead of feeding all cables out via a single lead, Hiper have made five individual holes at the rear and the cables are managed into their respective plug connector. The cables are sleeved black, but some people are also going to miss the UV reactive colored sleeving found on the original Type-R units. It seems that the designer of the new Type-R MKII units is aiming for a more elegant and understated look than their predecessors.

Both of the units are cooled by the same monstrous Yate Loon GP 135mm fan. The fans are silver bladed and also have blue LEDs attached to their frames. Curiously, almost half of the fan’s surface is covered by a thin, clean piece of plastic. It seems as if Hiper is trying to guide the airflow to enter mostly from the rear part of the unit, however this will reduce the airflow of the fan as well.

The interior of the Type-R MKII units is similar as we expected, but the 880W unit is significantly superior. Overall, their design is simple with a single major transformer. The secondary side capacitors of the 680W unit are made by SamXon and the heatsinks are rather basic, while the heatsinks of the 880W unit are significantly improved and the secondary side capacitors are made by KZE. The primary side capacitor is an 85C rated Siemens PET capacitor for both units, strange enough as most companies decide on 105C rated capacitors (at least on the primary side), to help improve the long-term reliability of their units.
