Packaging and the modules
While the packaging of the GEIL Black Dragon series is nothing extraordinary elaborate, it stands out from the crowd. The modules are supplied in a black box which draws attention, without being overwhelmed with artwork and colors. At the back of the box you can see some of the basic specifications of the set you are buying and the modules are secured inside a plastic case. RAM modules are extremely hard to damage during transportation since they are very lightweight and physically durable, so this package is more than enough for their protection.
The GEIL Black Dragon modules are built on an entirely black 8-layer PCB and do not have heatspreaders. Despite the lack of the heatspreaders GEIL reprints the memory chips so we cannot be sure from which manufacturer they are coming from.
For those concerned about their modules getting too hot due to the lack of heatspreaders, they are really not necessary for DDR2 modules running at this speed and voltage. They are usually installed by manufacturers to give their modules extra aesthetic appeal and slightly more headroom when overclocking.
Each of the GEIL Black Dragon modules has a golden dragon head engraved on the front. The ‘eyes’ of the dragon are actually two small red LED lights, which "glow" as long as the system is powered on, creating a nice visual effect. While that has nothing to do with the performance of the modules, it will please those who are looking to also enhance the aesthetics of their system.
