GX2
vs X1900 Crossfire and “True” SLI
All
of the marketing information you will find from
Nvidia shows that the GX2 is a single card solution;
we have some trouble agreeing with that as the product
is clearly 2 cards connected together. Given the
cost of the GX2 which at this time is a shade under
£400 we’ve compared it to the X1900XT
and 7900GTX for the majority of our tests as there
is less than £100 of a difference between
the products. There is also an argument that the
GX2 should be tested against other dual card solutions
and therefore here are two examples of how the 7950
GX2 compares in Multi GPU mode to the 7900GTX SLI
and the X1900XT in Crossfire.
The
result of pairing up a set of XT’s or GTX’s
is that the systems both outperform the 7950 GX2
in the latest games at high detail. The GX2 is playable
on these settings at all times however the Radeon
setup is clearly the performance leader. In addition
to this the Radeon would also allow you to enable
Anti-Aliasing in Oblivion and still maintain playability,
something which is not an option for the Geforce
cards.
The Crossfire
and SLI systems would come at a much higher price
though and here is a breakdown of how much each
of the above solutions would cost:
GX2: £398
/ $549
7900 GTX
SLI: £634 / $798 (price of 2 GTX’s)
X1900XT CF:
£575/ $738 (price of X1900CF + X1900XT)
The above
prices were taken from a leading UK and US retailers
known for competitive pricing.
