AMD is
about to introduce socket AM2 and socket F which
will support DDR-2 RAM only, which Intel has been
using for quite some time now. As you can imagine,
the time of DDR RAM is slowly drawing to a close.
Nevertheless, companies began shipping new, faster
DDR RAM modules and kits, probably the last series
of high end DDR RAM which will be produced. Today
it feels like a sad day, as this probably is the
last review of DDR RAM on Driver Heaven which I
will be writing. We will be taking a look at the
fastest 2GB DDR RAM kit available, the F1-4000BIU2-2GBHV
series by G.Skill.
The HV series
from G.Skill is a 2GB PC4000 kit which can run at
250MHz (500MHz DDR) with only 2.6V. They can run
with 3/3/2/8 timings as well, which makes them by
far the fastest high speed 2GB kit available. Older
PC4000 2GB kits could run only with 3/4/4/8 timings,
which had them performing considerably slower than
the new HV series.
G.Skill recommends
MSI, Epox and DFI nForce 4 motherboards for their
RAM modules. We tried the RAM on an Asus nForce
4 motherboard, as well as a Gigabyte ULi chipset
motherboard without any issues, but we decided to
test them on an Epox 9NPA+ Ultra motherboard nonetheless
in order to maximize their potential.

Packaging and the
modules:
The modules
are supplied in a fairly simple plastic package.
The packaging is entirely clear and should be adequate
to protect the two modules during transport. The
only complaint that can be mentioned concerning
the packaging is that it is not sealed, which means
someone can open it and close it again without leaving
the slightest trace or mark.

RAM
modules from G.Skill in the past rarely
had headspeaders. Nevertheless, the HV series
has a nice set of blue heatspreaders affixed.
The G.Skill logo is engraved on one side,
along with a sticker with the model number,
serial number and specifications, nothing
special about the way it looks.

The
heatspreaders appear well attached to the
RAM chips as there are no visible gaps,
the PCB is a standard green.
