Shadermark 2 ( http://www.shadermark.com ) is an interesting Direct X 9 benchmark as it allows you to test GPUs under various conditions. For instance, Shadermark 2 can be configured to run shaders using different Direct X 9 HLSL complier profiles. The benchmark also contains an option to compare partial precision (where available) to full precision performance.

The default PS2 profile, PS 2_0, was designed to be ideal across a wide range of hardware. Over time, Microsoft has updated the DirectX 9 SDK with additional HLSL profiles. The first update saw the inclusion of PS 2_0_a. A compiler profile for PS_2_b will be added shortly.

It is important to note that PS_2_a and PS_2_b are not new shader models, nor are they updates to the DirectX 9 runtime. They are simply HLSL compiler profiles designed with specific hardware limitations in mind. For instance, the PS_2_0 compiler profile was designed with the Direct X 9 spec in mind, and shaders compiled using this option typically use as many registers as possible, as defined in the spec. Some competitor products experience serious performance degradation as register usage increases. The PS_2_a compiler profile was designed to accommodate these products by utilising fewer registers.

Shadermaerk 2 also includes an ANTI-DETECT mode that can be useful when trying to determine whether a graphics vender is specifically detectingb the Shadermark2 application, or recognizing and replacing the ShaderMark shaders.

Now onto the Nvidia boards, and this "error" was flagged on both cards, showing they do not support all the shaders available in the testing procedure.
