High Definition Playback
Casino Royale Chapter 2 (Chase through the construction site). Casino Royale is encoded in High Definition 1080p format using MPEG4 AVC compression (rather than Mpeg 2 which is used on older Blu-Ray’s) and comes on a dual layer(50Gb) disc. The aspect ratio of 2.40:1 is used with letterbox bars at the top and bottom of the 16:9 image.
Our High Definition playback testing allows the 8800 GT to demonstrate one of the major reasons it is a card which excels in more than just gaming.
The Blu-Ray test is most impressive with the 8800 GT reducing the CPU usage of our test system during playback to less than 5% in all but one section of playback.
With HD-DVD playback of a disc which uses the VC-1 codec we see that the CPU usage is higher than that experienced on Blu-Ray and it appears that Nvidia still has some work to do in getting perfect decoding of VC-1 in hardware. Regardless of this it is clear that performance is excellent and well ahead of the 2900 series which features older, more basic acceleration of high definition video.
