rolleyes Never ask a software developer for a simple web site

Well, my fiance [Hannah] saw something at work where you got a website announcing your engagement that worked ind of like a "wedding blog", and they charged like, $15 a month or so....

...I immediately decided that was crap and was far to simplistic for my liking

...so....a month later, armed with enough PHP, mySQL, and AS2.0 to make something good [or cause IE7 to crash in spectacular fashion when typos occurred ] it's coming together nicely.

http://www.hannahandjohn2008.com

If this comes off as "site pimping", by all means ignore it...but well...I'm not sure how it could, since there's no ads/revenue...except the server bill that comes out of my pocket

...but if yall could check it out and let me know if it all works, I've tested it in Opera 9 & IE7, but haven't a clue what it will do in FF or Safari or anything else, nor do I know how all the dynamic elements will fare on a slow machine.

Basically, let me know what yall find breaks it

Cool! It works for me.

As for the countdown: Are you taking into consideration the Daylight/Standard hours changes between now and then?

And, this sentence needs a correction:

"from a slightly less nerdy stance then the previous entry"

then -> than

AND, where are some pics of Hannah???

she has an "avatar" if you will, once she finds out hwo to use it tomorrow, they'll be up.

as for the timer...well..it pulls LOCAL system time, isntead of forcing a EST timestamp, so it's counting down to 5 PM in whatever time zone the server is in....not 5 PM EST like it should...that's a boo boo on my part for not thinkign of that until i uploaded to the server [not the sort of thign localhost testing will catch either ]

PS - I miss the then/than thin 9 out of 10 times...but this time i'm gunna blame it being almsot 4am

I'll fix it tomorrow

It doesn't work at all, first I thought it is because I don't have the Flash player installed, but you didn't mention Flash in the first post. I don't know... I use Maxthon browser with IE6 SP2 core.

Here is how it looks:

no. I just can't type worth a damn...as for it not working in maxthon...what version of flash player is it using...I'll try and get maxthon to try it, but, isn't maxthon the IE6 core with tabs and some other goodies added in?

And Allan...well..this is one of those things that had been getting put off so that I could do drivers, actually she came up with the idea back in like, october or so

EDIT - seems maybe there's an issue with disabling scripting in IE6.....probably the cachebuster script that keeps your PC and the server from holding it in cache, so it reloads EVERY time to keep you from having to force-refresh to get it to show updates

With XP Pro x64, I see the same thing as RoyBatty if I'm using the IE7 64 bit. If I'm using the 32 bit verssion, it shows up. IE7 x64 doesn't 'do' flash.

The same thing happens here too. With IE7 x64 I don't see a LOT of adds and sig pictures.

I do believe that good sites should allow you to navigate without relying on Flash or Scripting. Maybe put a "Skip Intro" link on the page or a "View HTML Version" and allow users to bypass the Flash and Scripting requirements.

It is becoming more common for companies to block the use of scripting and flash and even acrobat reader, because they are showing to be security risks.

Since they gained the ability to interact with system files outside of their limited environment, they can be manipulated.

If Flash was still a very limited "Player Only", it would simply be annoying, not a risk. Acrobat could and probably should be released in a "passive reader only" version without additional functionality.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Flash Basic - should be a passive play only item that IT departments can feel comfortable installing. All workers could be approved for such a plug-in.

Flash Standard - interactive features that only those "in need" could be approved to use. Save a lot of headaches that way.

Same for Acrobat Reader.

Just my opinion.

i did flash because i enjoy it, and whether people like it or not, it's becoming common place and a "standard" if you will

Once I finish the flash version and get it polished off, I'll likely work on an AJAX version as an alternate, but I'm sure that will offend some HTML purists too....so maybe a nice WAP subdomain that has nothing but text would suit everyone best?

Anyways, the scripting disabled or x64 nto working are all noted, but not really an issue, as I'm nto runnign a business or anythign here, and if some people can't see it, I can go "TDB" and ignore it

...if I were doing a site for work or something, flash would be a "hi bandwidth alternative" to an AJAX interface, yes

yup...and I appreciate it...and like I said...AJAX is something I've been meaning to learn for a while now...I'll likely port it to that once the flash version is done...first I have to finish all the modules in flash though
