Anyone know of a good FREE web host?
I'm building a simple web site for a non-profit organization/club I am associated with and don't have a very large budget (almost zero).
I'm looking for a host that won't put any advertising, porn, or other crap in my page (or the least amount as possible) with a decent amount of space (10 - 50 Mb)
The purpose of the site will be to simply let people know who we are, where we are, and what we do in order to help build up membership.
In a nutshell, it is a target shooting club. I want to post the range address and contact info, hours of operation, types of shooting disciplines, and a few links to pics and other associated sites.
Thanks in advance.
Scotty

Do NOT rely on web1000 - if what's said about them is true, they'll let you build up a search engine placement, and drop you and use the address for crap!
In the UK, I'd say use a free ISP that provides webspace, as it's probably the only free and uncluttered space you'll get.
The UK free ISP proliferation is the result of a particular telephone call charge structure, where the ISP takes a small cut from a local rate call charge, so the situation is not going to be the same elsewhere.

webstrike solutions
http://webstrikesolutions.com/
they claim to give you your first 12 months free in the hopes that you'll pay for the service after 12 months. Windows Server 2003 or Red Hat Linux. They don't make you display banners nor do they cause any banners to be displayed on your site. 100mb disk, 2GB/mo bandwidth(hey, it's free) unlimited pop3, your own domain, cgi-bin, php4, perl5, ssl, mysql, jsp.
i don't know anyone that has used them or anything else about them. and nope, i don't work for them either, i just stumbled upon them one day and bookmarked the site in case i needed it.

Well, you know, I know you said that you wanted a free provider, but I don't really know of any quality ones. On the other hand, I do know of a pay webhost that is spectacular, particularly for low-demand users like me. I've got a site hosted with them. They are fast, very awesome to deal with, and extremely cheap. They cost $5 a month and give you 25MB of space with 1000MB of transfer. And it only costs an additional $4.50 a gigabyte if you happen to exceed 1000MB/month, which is pretty much the cheapest I have seen. In addition to all that, they have a really good staff*, very nice policies**, and really cool control panel software. I like them a lot.
---
* I had trouble logging into their FTP once (I was using the wrong login), and I got an e-mail saying "Hey, looks like you're having some trouble... remember that your login is your site (whatever.com)" -- I was impressed!
** One month I experienced about a week of downtime so they gave me the rest of the month free.

You could try http://www.splicehost.com
$3.00 a month - Free domain, 50mb Disk Space, Unlimited bandwidth. I use this host myself, every once and while my server go down. But then again I'm transferring gigs a day lol.
$5.00 a month - Same as above except 100 megs webspace.
http://www.brinkster.com/
Best free host site with no ads I've ever used. Check them out.

what is this with threads over 2 weeks old? they arent all useless ......... a free host is a free host, im sure some new members will be looking for one, so if you guys have any more good companies, then post the linkages.

Take a look at Angelfire. They're actually pretty good, 20 megs of space, ftp upload support, 1gig monthly bandwidth, and it's actually pretty fast -- downloaded at 100kb/s+ for a 467kb jpg. Yes they put ads in your webpage but lemme give you a hint. You can code your html page in such a way that it'll block those ads out. That's what I did for my page
The other host worth looking into is angeltowns.com. Free of ads, unlimited traffic, and 50meg space. Only downside is it provides no ftp support and it's kind of slow especially during peek times.

their is no such thing of a "GOOD" Free host. just to clue ya in. however their are some free hosts that offer plans in which will give average or underpar users what they need at no cost.
for anyone looking into hosting for any website, i strongly suggest paying for one usually they cost cheap for small stuff, like 3 to 5 $ a month for something. some plans even pay yearly and its eaven cheaper a month.
www.webhostingtalk.com is where you should do your research and ask your questions, ALWAYS search on those forums for the host your going to go with, whether it be free or not. its the best and most use resource, so u will find answers regardless.
as for you runing your website for something simple i suggest geocities.com its simple and free, and if you dont consume a load of bandwidth, it should be up most of the time.
bandwidth costs a lot of money, and if ya want bandwidth, your going to have to pay... (i mean lots of bandwidth).
