Re: You Remake by MD6
Nice guitar stuff MD! If you get tired of Bernyurass, AZ you should move up to Freezyurass, MN and you can play lead for our 6 gigs a year band.

Re: You Remake by MD6
Right on Maddogg! I really enjoyed that. What are you using for your guitar tone, is it virtual?
I also listened to your Wonderful tonight rendition. I like to take midi files like that and copy the tracks in FL Studio to VSTi tracks. You can get a much nicer sound. In fact the midiness almost evaporates. ANYHOW don't want hijack your thread. Nice work. Last edited by mobomofo; Feb 26, 2009 at 05:30 PM. |

I automated all the guitar tone changes as the J-station has MIDI IN/OUT. So the ramp up to distorted tone was pre programmed so, as I played, I didnt need to do any changes. The Wha was done similarly - I drew in the 'foot' controller which was the wha pedal control - and just played the notes as needed. 4 takes for all guitars, with some minor cut and paste to fix the real foul screw ups I recorded. If you listen close enough you'll hear errors I didnt correct, but I didnt want to spend too much time on it. I may fix later, a few things are now really bugging me with it. Quote:
I have learned, from inspecting MIDI that sounded better, for instance, a demo song from a Korg 0/1 Pro was phenominal - I disected in Cakewalk (V5 at the time I think, maybe it was powertracks pro, I had that first) looking at them I found that note velocity was extremely important. I then also noticed when playing with my MIDI keyboard controller - even for drum tracks - I naturally made 'sorta patterns' of velocity as I 'played'... So I spent a lot of time trying different velocity patterns.. .Now I can pretty much just draw them in the controller view of Sonars Piano Roll editor and get stuff to sound less machine like. Previously, I tried some MIDI utils (CAL) that attempted to 'humanize' midi tracks but also tried 'messing up' timing too - but that, to me, just made it sound like sloppy playing. So I spend most time playing in my sloppy way to get velocity, fix timing with quantizing. |

Re: You Remake by MD6
Ya I knew it was real guitar but I meant virtual as in amp modeling/fx. I forgot you have one of those J-Station units. I was going to get a SAMSON C Valve, as discussed before. Primarily for the phantom power and SPDIF output. In fact I ordered one, and I just got an email saying they where out of stock. I just found a used J Station for 100 bucks. Is that a good deal? It only does 41000 sample rates via SPDIF. Have you ever tried recording vocals through that beast? It seems like an interesting solution for recording guitar. Lately I have been getting some pretty good tones out of Amplitube vst/fx. But I am just getting back into this PC recording lately. I just don't like having to record dry, and then try to eliminate the noise in the recording before applying vst effects. Not to mention when using high gain simulations, the sample get really noisy again. You seem to have a really clean sound on your recording. Do you have to do any noise reduction on the guitar track?
Peace out for now, and thanks for your advice.

Re: You Remake by MD6
+1 on the LCD monitor... CRT monitors are very noisy especially with single coils......... it's like there is one spot in the room quite a few feet away from your system, that IF you face the right way it's almost quiet. With an LCD the room is all yours.

Re: You Remake by MD6
You bet, LCD rules. I clued into that some time ago.
Well I just reordered that Samson preamp, hopefully it decreases my noise floor. I will try to it out at different sample rates. I'll probably be back here gleaning some info from you guys when I get it going. That used AUDIGY 2 ZS is really worth the 10 bucks I paid for it! (thanks to KX, and this forum) Next I need to acquire a decent condenser mic. Income tax time maybe. Friggin layed off of work now, like throngs of other people. Take it easy people.

Re: You Remake by MD6
really nice guitar riffs maddog, but.. why using a "j-station" if you have great kx- effects like "tubedrive"?

The j-station has pre-made amplifier and cabinet simulations that tubedrive does not have. to do 'sorta' amp/cab sims, you need a complex filter, and I did try, quite a bit actually, with little success - but the Jstation makes it very simple and cheap (compared to comparable solutions). Perhaps if I were better at programming DSP I could get better results with kX DSP than I have, but I suck at programming, Lex on the other hand posted some nice tone example once... so I suppose its possible at some level, but he did really post anything that exposed the *range* of tone possible. So I dunno what is possible either. |
