Since there is no better alternative I'll be increasing the stats for "found" software...
I use Media Player Classic from the codec pack K-Lite Mega Codec Pack which I completely legally "found" somewhere.

Although I use ffdshow (which is free IIRC) I said that I use the software that came with my player. Basically the only software that came w/ my player (which was in an older HP computer) was WMP.

So even though I went out and found the codec needed to decode DVD formats, I choose not to vote that way because it sounded shady.

Also, I rarely use my PC to watch DVD's, my dad has his retired stereo system parts all put together to form a 5.1 surround in the livingroom, and even though he's just on a 21" TV, he plans on getting a huge Plasma TV soon.

I "found" the legal software on the internet. Why does everyone suddenly assume that if you don't pay for something it's illegal? Media Player Classic and Videolan player both play DVDs fine, and are better than most of those DVD playing programs you've paid for.

I use VLC on both Linux and Windows, and MPC is good on Windows as well. There is even AC3Filter if you want to use free DVD decoder with other DirectShow compatible player.
I got some software with a laptop, but I have never used commercial DVD software and I don't plan to.

why buy a widescreen laptop if not to watch movies

...and where's the "I 'modified' windows media player to play DVDs" option?

Never... when you have a 53" HDTV rear-projection home theatre with 5.1 sound over Athena speakers, the PC experience is a bit anti-climactic.

Word.

I sit and watch mine on a 61" hdtv with 7.1 and nerver go to the movies. What I saved in movie fees on a weekly basis pays for my theatre experience.
I watch dvds on my laptop when Im at work.

Does anyone know of legitimately free dvd software that lets me use dolby headphone, I use a "found" copy of windvd to get dolby headphone (cause I mostly watch DVDs on my laptop when I can only use headphones) and would like to get a legal way to watch dvds with dolby headphone. (it's freaky how well it simulates surround sound on stereo headphones.

Dumb question... what movies are availalbe in 7.1? Or are you letting your receiver synth out a 6.1/5.1 stream?

I find its hard enough to find 6.1 films. My Yamaha has a 'DTS enhanced' mode to handle 6.1 via my 5.1 setup and I don't feel like i'm missing anything. All Athena products are timbre-matched so getting an extra speaker down the road isn't a problem, i just don't want to have to buy another receiver at this point... its good enough.

re: theatres. I agree 100%. I figure i save $50/month in movie tickets from my previous spending habits, which has probably paid off most of my system now 3 years later. This doesn't include the sports i watch at home with friends vs going to a bar too...

I used to watch all my dvds on the computer with Media Player Classic, but lately i've been using a modded Xbox & PS2 as dvd-players among other things.

Some quality movies like LotR's i've had the pleasure of watching them on a co-workers 140" screen via a dlp-projector.
