i consider it to be a synthetic test, the only way to bench systems is (in y opinion) with games

They are useful from time to time
I use them to bench very rarely, since my system is not quite new (A64/9600) but I like to see new version every time since it always offers a lot of eye-candy :-)
However, for judging a new system, I would consider using 3dmark with Doom3, HL2, Far Cry etc. You are playing games, not benchmarks.
