When people keep buying something that is high priced, IT IS NOT going to be a smart, logical move to lower the price. When there is high demand and only one source of the product, there is no way in hell they will lower the price.
I have heard about the dvd/cd backup you can do with steam. My question is, can you do that, then format the drive, buy a new pc etc, then install the game and play single player game without connecting to the internet? Without telling the mighty brother that you have installed the game and want to play single player? The answer as far as I know is NO. Anyway we are going in circles here. My original reply to your message (kalx) was just because I felt offended by the "only pirates don't want steam" type of attitude. Let's end this.

im sure the original thread was "Your favourite First person shooter this year"
didnt think that price would come into it to be honest.
if i want to play a game enuff, and the difference in price was as small as it is between the top 3 or 4....it wouldnt matter.....
after all...it the game that counts in this thread, not the price.
just cant understand how these threads always degenerate into arguments, and drift off topic.

I still haven't finished HL2, but I've made it quite a ways into the game. (Alyx and I have just arrived after spending a week in the transporter.)
Based on what I've experienced so far, FAR CRY would rate slightly above HL2 for a couple of reasons:
1. FAR CRY is just so much better in the way you can go just about anywhere on the map without boundaries. There are so many ways you can complete the objective and not be confined to some linear approach.
2. FAR CRY doesn't require all the restrictions of STEAM just to be able to play it....PERIOD! Had I known beforehand the trouble I'd have with STEAM, I'd likely have waited quite some time before buying HL2. That said, I'm kind of glad I didn't wait because the game is really, really GOOD! I've enjoyed it along with the few frustrating parts, but, mostly it's been a lot of fun.

I am voting for HL2, it was between that and FarCry for me, granted I didn't play D3, but I've seen a few people play and it and wasn't impressed. HL2 just grabbed my attention more.

Doom3 had nice engine, farcry too, but HL2 had imo best story and I liked the first hl back then. So hl2 was my n.1 before the release.

I am having a hard time deciding between far cry and half life 2. They are both great games. Doom 3 is another story (or lack there of).

if this same question were to be asked 6 months from now, i bet it would be a little more evened out between all the games, simply because people would have already finished playing all the games by then.

Gotta give it to HL2. Farcry was probably second this year, I found that game really difficult though on medium and hard settings. Like, impossibly hard. For the record, my all-time favorites: Deus Ex, System Shock 2

I loved FarCry and Hl2. I gave my vote to FRYCRY because the SP game was longer (by a big magin)-more bang for my bucks. If HL2 was cheaper it would have won here. But it was too expensive for such a short game. Too many loads for HL2 which slowed the flow. FarCry came with MP instead aof relying on CS for its MP play. And the FARCRY doesn't use STEAM.
HL 2 will win, because of the hype and the fans though.

Gave my vote for Far Cry as it was a superb game with great gfx, ai and environment when it came out... Also it provided more bang for the buck than HL2 which was a too short and felt more like a technology demo through out the game. Doom3 was good fun also and gets 3rd place behind HL2, and Painkiller which aint on the list gets 4th place for being the best no-brainer "if it moves, kill it" game of the year.
