Seems like 1GB of RAM is taking the lead.

you mean XL ... I have 2GB of the stuff! 4x512... 2 of the sticks have activity LEDs and two sticks are platinum. You paid #270??? I got the platinum the day after release... paid 245... then I was able to get the stuff with activity LEDs a couple of weeks back for #200... #270 is a little ott! I paid #445 total for 4x512 modules.
I think that the Platinum is prettier

Ditto... that and I was getting fed up with only 512mb (2x256) of 2.5-3-3-7 - I was wanting a gig of low latency ram for a long time... finally got the money and so got my first GB of XL

I think he meant shitty as in high-latencies... ie. not Kingston Hyper-X - the normal "shitty" Kingston

ahhh......that makes better sense. But even still, i'd rather have shitty 1Gb DDR 400 ram, than kick ass DDR 333.

it all depends what fsb you have... if you don't do any overclocking on a 333fsb chip (like most bartons)... then it'd be better to get kick-ass 333 than crappy 400

Last time I upgraded my CPU/mobo, late 2003, I went with an n-Force 2 board, and had read that some people with 1GB or more of memory were having trouble with nF2 boards, not being compatible in Dual-Channel, random re-boots. Whether this was ever a real, widespread problem I don't know. Haven't really followed up on it.
Since the upgrade was the first time I had ever re-built everything from the case up, I didn't want anymore problems than was already going to occur. So, I got 768MB of 2700 DDR, made by an off-brand but most expensive at the time, Ultra memory...heatspreaders..yada yada...
Next upgrade will be either late this year or early next, (64-bit AMD FX/nF 3 or 4...PC 3200 DDR 1 or DDR 3) I'll go with at least a GB of memory, as yes, with Farcry, I get some stuttering occasionally with graphics/memory being swapped from the HDD.
I expect memory shortages will be a concern with the upcoming new dx9 games.
Actually thinking maybe roughly 1.5 or 2GB would be a minimum.
Won't be OCZ brand though, as since their little silver content problem, I have no faith
in that company.
Is that substantiated or valid? Maybe...not. But don't need the hassle of finding out something bad abut them.
Probably will go with Crucial...

man just about everybody has more ram than me. i have a meagre 512 mb of pc2100 ram . would it be better to get another corsair 512 stick of pc2100 ram (regular latency~$81) to make it a gig, or replace my current stick with 512 mb of corsair xms pc2700 (low latency~$115), or save up my money to get 1024 mb of corsair value pc2700 ram (regular latency~$153)? i'm very limited in my budget right now...
edit: i can only support pc2700 ram on my motherboard. prices shown here are from zipzoomfly.com (free 2day shipping!!!)

It's well worth saving up to get low latency ram... just cope with your 512mb pc2100 until you can afford some good stuff!
I see you have a p4... wait and get some good ddr400 (pc3200)... if you get 1gb of low latency stuff you will really notice the difference!
I'll check some stuff out for you on newegg and post again in a minute
